I agree wioth that. And like I sad resumewise they are very equal. Leonard's is better at the very top, Duran's is deeper. Dominance and longevity and achievements (fighting with success at higher weights while beeing older and so on) put Duran above Leonard.

btw. I don't rate Chavez that far behind Lenoard.

I agree with most of this except your somewhat missing the point. Leonard was great in 1980 but young, immature and thinking he could go toe-toe with Duran was foolish. In terms of boxing intelligence and maturity he wasnt peaked, he smartened up after that

While Duran indeed does have the clear cut win, on balance he only went 1-2 against Leonard, where as Leonard ner lost to Hagler, not giving him the rematch helped that but either way he came out on top against both men.

It is indeed sad that duran chose to 'quit' in 1980 (he would have lost anyway.) ,and its even sadder that an immediate rematch at 147 never materialised. For every excuse that leonard 'fought the wrong fight',we have the duran undertrained' line. Bearing in mind that if we say leonard 'learned' from the experience of duran, then duran must have learnt about fighting ray as well,so theoretically he could have beat ray easier next time. (and this point i have never heard made by anyone.) However, duran ****ed this up by not taking the rematch seriously enough,so 1-1. The third fight is meaningless in a 147 context as its at 160 and when both are much older.
The fact that its really 1-1 is why we still debate whether new orleans ray could beat montreal duran, did ray fight the wrong fight ,etc, etc. History can never give us that third immediate trilogy decider to set matters to rest,so,i will just say that when both were 100% up for it duran won clearly.
ps; in which other fight do you think ray looked 'better' all round than montreal leonard? (heart, guts, skill, power, stamina, will, etc)

This is very much a pro-Leonard stance though mate by the looks of it.

In short; yes, the case can be made for Leonard, if you're being unobjective. Interesting thread nonetheless:good

I presume we're talking head to head here, in which case, yes I think Leonard is 1 of the best middles. He beat arguably the best MW ever after all. Some styles would be tough for him at the weight but thats the same as Duran at WW

And duran was very competitive with that same middle, four years earlier and with a 135 frame. Let leonard lose a competitive decision to prime mike spinks and then we can talk...

Fair point yeah, but we all know the circumstances.

I take it you think he fights exactly the same way against prime Hagler and wins the decision?

You're not seriously suggesting that Leonard at middle was as good as Duran at welter? Surely, surely not??

If you seriously can't tell that a comment namedropping Missy Elliot and Paris Hilton was a joke, you need to get out more.
