Hope this isn't a waste of a thread but I had to take a week off to heal up from overdoing it & picking up some nagging injuries; which gave me a lot of time to think.

The big thing standing in my way of competing is my weight.
Muay thai + weights + crossfit type training + sprint intervals isn't really doing it.
Good ol' fashioned road work would strip the weight right off but my bum leg prevents me from doing it regularly.

I'm thinking of taking a few months off and joining a swim team full time.
I'll still lift and do some sprint work.
I'll pay more attention to my diet as well.
The goal's to drop 20 or 30 pounds, return to training in the fall; work hard for a few months, and hopefully compete in the winter.

The bumps & bruises are really wreaking havoc on my sleep.
I think if I focused on one thing at a time; I'd be a lot more successful.

Any of you experienced guys (and gals) out there think I'm smoking crack?

There are things you can do to limit the impact on your knees. I suffer the same problem, I'm not training to fight, but I've been training my ass off to get back into the sort of shape I was when I was younger. I generally love going for long distance runs, but my knees, especially my left knee just starts to ache. One thing I have done to mix things up for cardio has been using a rowing machine which has given my back some strange endurance, surprisingly good leg workout as well.

I'll jump on a treadmill and walk with the max incline as well which tends to wind me.. If you are trying to shed weight, you can do low intesity cardio, just make sure you are working for more than 45 minutes at a time.

My dad has a rowing machine back in Houston.
I used it once a long time ago and really tweaked my knee.
I'll give it another shot the next time I'm down that way.
We don't have any rowers at any of the gyms I go to.

With the swimming, I want to go at least 3 days a week (or at least 6 hours a week).
There was only one time I didn't drop a ton of weight from regular swimming and that time I didn't even go that often or that long, but still dropped a good 10~15lbs.
I may need 6 months to really see some results, but I'm going to do what i can until October.
I'm prepared to break the news to my muay thai coach tonight - that I'm cutting back on my fight training to focus on losing the weight through swimming.

I'd really like to get back into swimming shape.
That was the leanest I've ever been.

I think that is the most important aspect. The things you're currently doing are fine, but only in combination with a calorie deficit.
