[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFsXPaOxKIo[/ame] Some footage of a sparring beat down I received, from literally my best friend, after I first stepped back in the ring to train after a while in October. I'm in the red trunks. Haha I made this clip, and don't worry, I know I'm not in fighting shape right now, I obviously know I didn't perform well at all. But any constructive criticism is welcome :good I already know I have a lazy guard, but I like to pretend I can pull off the James Toney/Floyd May, philly shell/shoulder roll, and sometimes it works for me, other times not so much. I hate how everything is so strict in the amateurs, but it's a necessary evil I suppose. And if anyone is curious, my friend's name is Cody Smith, he's a 6'4", 205lb, 5-0 mma amateur, but has a large amount of strictly boxing training under his belt. He fight's out of Portsmouth, Va at Bushido MMA. January 19th vid - I finally uploaded this, it was right after the beatdown I posted above. Nothing big, just something else to watch. Gotta keep your hands up bro, even Floyd doesn't stay in the philly shell throughout the whole fight Also you're standing straight up which is giving your buddy the advantage of muscling your to the ropes
:good Yea, I get told that alot, and although I know it, it's alot harder to do, once you really start to get tired, but I need to push through it more. And looking at footage of me, I do see what you said, with standing too upright. Although Cody is much bigger than me, in height and weight (I'm 6'2", walk around at 180lbs), I square up too much, and stay on the inside, we he easily muscles me. But yet again, my stamina sucking, causes me to let it happen... I need to focus on my speed, and using it alot more effectively for sure.
If you have someone bigger than you, rather than backing up push forward and stay in the pocket. I used to do the same thing by backing up, but recently found a lot of success by staying in the pocket and using my angles
With staying on the inside, it works for some things (he has a countering festival when I throw from the outside) in that it lessens his counter shots, but on the inside, his weight wears me down even faster, mixed with the fact, just his inside punches on my elbows, almost feel like flush body shots, I dunno if it's because I'm not a solid as I could be, or his size, or a mix of both. But I mean, everytime I've sparred him, when I let combinations go, it flusters him, and throws him off, and in the video I posted, I barley threw and legit combo's because I had no lungs. The weekend of the 29th I should have another recorded sparring session, so I'll try to do more inside work, and push more, instead of being so passive. Hopefully I'll be able to show more improvement, but I learn everyday, so I'm confident I will.
I was ****in dead That vid I made, was a compilation from 3 rounds. And we didn't start sparring, until we did 5 warm up rounds, which I was already tired from. It's amazing, how quickly boxing stamina can be lost... I will get it back though.
You need to get some meat on your body shots, there is absolutely no leverage on them. Throw some jabs and straight punches in a while, especially when your friend closes the distance. The Philly shell doesnt seem to work for you either, if you friend didn't hold back and let his hand go more he could have pounded you, id stick to a normal guard. Also your mate needs some shoes.
Thanks for the input :good Yea, my stamina is shite, so my punching power was shite as well, barring the occasional one/two punch explosions I had, after he would hit me with 5-6 unanswered shots. And I deff do need to incorporate more jabs, and overall up my output. Because every time I can maintain my punch output in the past, it keeps the other guy off of me when I want him off of me. And you're right, if he truely unloaded, he could've had me out of there in one or two rounds I bet. And he dislikes wearing ring shoes cause he usually fights mma, so only when he's training with the pro boxers will he wear ring shoes.
No worries mate I had similar ish problems. Its a mixture of cardio but also punch endurance, doing constant 1-2's on the heavybag should help in this regard.
I know ... It was literally my first day in the boxing ring in quite a while... But no excuse I know. The next recorded session, will hopefully show you guys much improvement.
Why do people always put up videos saying it was at the end and they were so tired. And my opponent was so good. And I usually kick his ass but not this time I recorded it? This the first time you ever sparred? Your footwork is terrible? You do not look fast enough or experienced enough to even try a philly shell. No jab, nothing on them body shots. You look like you have just started only a few months ago. Learn the basics first before you spar again is my advice.
Don't be too embarassed. But you need to find a proper trainer- whats your story have you boxed before? Where do you train? I would even touch crossing your guard till you've mastered traditional stance and defence.
