3-2 3-2b feint 3-2 etc. It leaves a huge lane for the straight right, and if your opponent is smart enough to loop his right sometimes then you're probably ****ed unless you're way better. The uppercut can come through easily, basically every punch in the book lands easier. But it's the big lane up the middle that does it. When you're in opposite stances, that opening is shielded from your opponent by the angle of your body. And since you're a spouthpaw and they're gonna be throwing that right hand at you all day anyway, you want something that can do a better job of putting you in position to defend. Also the shoulder roll typically works because you see a right hand coming. As a southpaw, you're gonna have a hell of a time seeing a left hook coming in time to react--unless you react early by anticipating it. In which case you leave yourself open to having fake hooks thrown at you. Plus, if you do it on the outside (which you probably don't, I'm just saying) they can pick you off upside the head with a jab all day. (this is the amateurs. those are gonna score) I'm just absolutely not a fan of a shoulder roll in opposite stances. If you can make it work for you then great, stranger things have happened. But there's a reason you don't see it that often...
And btw, none of that is to say that it can't work. It just has a low rate of success in the amateurs. If you're good enough to pull it off, great. Definitely not something you want to rely on though.
No it doesn't....and the shoulder roll is not a type of guard. Use it if it works for you, I'm just saying. Even Floyd shies away from using it against a southpaw. It's just not generally the best idea.
In the am's I think you are correct. I get hounded by everyone "you're not a ****ing pro, save that **** for the pro's" etc, implying that unless I'm ko'ing guys in the am's, it won't help me on the cards, and could very well get me docked points if the ref decides to give me a count cause he thinks I'm getting hit too much. I know the am's are much stricter than the pro ranks. But I'm hoping to just master a style that is good for me, that is awkward as **** for almost anyone to deal with. I'm glad I'm a lefty, that's step one right :yep?
Nice, what would you say your best/Favorite punch, and 2/3 to use is? Or should I say, which do you use, do you think is most effective? ( against) righties, and lefties.
What is what all these people telling you not to stand straight up? Damned right you should be straight up... hands up, elbows riding the sides of your rib cage. Especially fighting a shorter guy! He can't reach your head there. He will be forced go to your body. That is when you punish him. You crouch down and you are a prime target for uppercuts. There is no good reason for a southpaw to be doing the shoulder roll. You mistake a straight for a hook or vice versa? Lights out. Hell not even FMJ uses the shoulder roll against southpaws!
Ignore Guzman. He is a little freak who has been exposed as an anorexic little ****. You do look like you could benefit from some technical coaching though, ie how to throw punches with proper weight behind them. Staring off with the philly shell if you are inexperienced is a bit like learning to run before you can walk I think.
Definitely my 2 and 3, when I'm shoulder rolling I like to feint with an uppercut and throw my hook. Works like a charm
Nice. Yea, I love to shoot my left, and follow with my lead right hook. It seems that people can figure it out easier, than if I just feinted, but when it does land, it's a solid combo. I'll put more emphasis on my 2, 3 upper feint, then hook more, and try to get better results whenever I try shoulder rolling.
Finally added a quick vid from sparring another one of my friends who dabbles in MMA. :bbb [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31uRsYaDF7g[/ame]
Good on you for posting the videos dude. Tell me, do you spar last thing in your training? Kinda looks like you do? Whats everyones opinions on that? I always think you need to do it when your in good shape, so you can keep it light, fast and try stuff. When your too beat, its a just a slog. No?
I dunno a lot about boxing, but this is stupid. There ARE southpaw fighters who use the shoulder roll effectively. Not many, but there are many good reasons for a southpaw to do the shoulder roll. Again, I dunno a lot about boxing, but if it works, obviously he should continue using it.
