Excellent post! It underlines an aspect of boxing that casual fans just don't understand. You can talk handspeed, footwork, power etc. but a huge part of Ward's game is deception. Any professional boxer, even those that are considered **** poor defensively, can avoid a shot if they know when and where it's coming from. Ward's feints, spacing, footwork and timing keeps his opponents guessing about what's next. It's what makes him special. Without it he'd be half the fighter. Anyone who doesn't understand this would learn it 15 seconds after being in a ring with a half decent amateur boxer.
I agree man. I've always thought two of the most important aspects of both boxing (and football/soccer) is deception. The ability not only to keep your opponent from knowing what you will do, but to actively make him think you will do something entirely different is crucial, and the best in both sports have always been masters of this.
Terrific breakdown. Reminds me why I come here. Ward's an exceptional fighter, but a lot of the things he does are quite subtle, and you broke them down well, giving me not only a greater appreciation of the man's style, but a greater appreciation of the craft itself. Much appreciated.
Didnt think i could appreciate Ward anymore than i already did, that sneaky elbow he landed on Froch made me laugh i must admit, he's more sneaky than i thought before.
He's a good fighter. He's obviously a Hopkins fan the way he fights. I'm not as impressed with him as others are . He could be a little less stiff and put his punches together more. I've even noticed southpaw Trout taking some cue's from Pacquiao in the Cotto fight.
I would love to see a Calslappy fan do this with Joe now. But it wont look so good. Great thread. Ward is a real fighter and not a hypejob like Calslappy.
Yep . Pac throws that combo all the time, it's one of his vintage combos. It's a crazy combination but effective obviously. This content is protected This content is protected
I remember making this comparison in my old thread. Great eye by the TS to identify Ward being able to anticipate Dawson's upper body movement and planting him with feints. Manny did a similar thing in the mid-rounds against Bradley. I've yet to think of something Ward can't do. Incredible to watch.
