Ward's a pretty dirty fighter; I don't think you can really argue that. But then most fighters try to bend the rules a little to ensure victory. So long as you hide it or don't get caught, then it's all part of the game really.
Zags doesn't strike me as having been as cerebral a fighter as Ward, though he was very good at adapting to beat his opponents, which showed that he was at least aware of what he was doing in the ring and not just running on instinct. But there's no doubt that he relied a hell of a lot on his insane speed and endurance, things which most normal fighters just don't have. I think you can break it down like this: put Ward's brain into any reasonably trained fighter's body and you'd have a very good to great fighter. Put Zag's brain into any reasonably trained fighter's body and you'd have someone gassing out after a few rounds, and likely getting stopped. Same with Jones really, minus the gassing. Doesn't stop all three from being great fighters, just for different reasons.
Damn, good write up! Not sure how I missed it the past couple days. As Froch said, he's usually too far or too close for his opponent.. I don't see anyone beating him anytime soon, he's too complete. It will take another very special fighter to beat him.
Great breakdown. Ward does definitely use the crouch as a sort of defensive maneuver. Great call on that. He's definitely P4P #1 for me at the moment.
leave it to a ******* to bring him into a thread dedicated to Ward's greatness. This content is protected
So I was reading Wards post fight comments about Rigo-Donaire, and he said that he would have advised Donaire to mix-in the above with his arsenal, to negate Rigo's ducking low to avoid shots.
:yep A fighter ducking low towards the rear hand in the opposite stance requires throwing where they're head is going to be with a straight or uppercut. When Donaire had success, it was doing that.
Ward holding and hitting isn't in-fighting. It's illegal, but his footwork and jab are tremendous. Great post.
All of this entirely. You can see that Ward's adaptable style of boxing is a testament to his intelligence and attitude. He put's his ego to the side and looks at boxing from a purist point of view. He has no hang ups about being weaker than anyone in certain areas, instead he will adapt his gameplan to wherever the opposition doesn't like to fight and beat them handily there.
