I started doing this in a couple of different ways in a couple of different threads, and thought it would be fun to put it all together. Right now it's Usyk vs everybody, but Liston is a guy that people have been intrigued to compare him against for a long time.

    A few caveats:
    1) The rankings are of course what they were when our boys fought them, although I thought it was fair to mention that some of Usyk's are former champs, as that has a certain prestige. I included a lot of guys under Liston who were ranked at one time or another, some briefly.

    2) I cannot find WBC archives for Uysk's oponnents

    3) I cannot find New York State Athletic Commmision Ratings for Liston, and those are purely NBA

    4) Because of rehydration, some of Uysk opponents may have been significantly heavier on the actual fight night.

    5) If anyone wants to suggest fighters be added, or subtracted, go ahead.

    6) I did the best I could but this was a lot of work, so let me know if I missed something.

    7) The rankings are a bit of an approximation for month. Because I don't have the day that the rating was released, if I went to the month the fight happened, I might be looking at the rating after the loss. So for a lot of these, I took the month before.

Personally, I don't remember Zora Foley being 18'1, but I could be wrong.

That’s confronting isn’t it? Do Ken Norton next lol. In Listons day the Cruisers would all be good sized to big by the times standards.
I think it’s a fair thing to say Usyk has got his foot in the door of the top 10 if you include the Cruiser run where they’re all over 200lbs 210-215 on average most likely.
EDIT: Or should we start chopping everything below 200lbs like people try to do evaluating Usyk? Liston would’ve beat… Clark and Williams in the top 10.

I agree, and like I said in another thread, I always accorded the same standards to Ezzard Charles--giving him credit for beating LHWs and middles who were good enough themselves to beat some heavies.

Really, guys fight guys coming up from other weight classes all the time. Liston himself suffered a bad break and got the SD loss to Marshall, who was a ranked LHW, and Holmes, who is listed here by many as a top 3 guy, lost to a LHW, and you can go on and on with that, so I don't see why Usyk's victories over strapping cruisers don't count for something.

Still, at the end of the day, it is fun to see that both guys have records that are remarkable for their day.

I did edit the post but really I just added a bit of snark lol. It’s just really good to see the sport going forward though we are in a time with another heavyweight similar to Wlad who is going to take a staple heavyweights spot for most top 10s. Depending on how you evaluate things anyway.

LOL that puts things in perspective :) Especially when you consider that those are weigh-in weights and not fight night weights.

Thanks. You forgot Harris for Liston, though.

Liston isn't in my top 10 (and neither is Usyk currently), but for those that have Liston there and says that Usyk is nowhere close this is a good illustration.

Resume wise as heavyweights the overall list means very little of course.

No-one would argue at this point that Usyk isn't higher on an ATG P4P list.

The fact is 7 guys there that weren't ranked at heavyweight. It looks all flashy and shiny via the cruiserweight ratings up but they count for absolutely zilch in a resume based heavyweight comparison if that's the aim. Those guys weren't ranked in the open division where as Liston's mostly were.

Usyk's building a fine resume at Heavyweight and if he fights another 5 or 6 times his top end will look quite impressive.

Have you tried using the waybackmachine on the WBC website for problem no. 2? I think I remember that working once before when I tried it.

And yet they were all heavier than Liston's best win :eusa_whistle:
