A couple of questions on Liston vs Ali 1

1) Liston's sholder was reportedly dislocated
2) both ali and dundee have said he wanted to quit so yes but because he felt like he was being cheated than out of a lack of willingness to continue

 

Classic forum will never admit Liston was a bully with little heart.

 

I'd say there's a divide there. I think he quit in both fights and a fair amount of others here do as well.

 

Aye, considering this is basically what happened. Although for some reason Liston couldn't believe his ridiculous fake roll in the 2nd fight hasn't resulted in him being counted out. He had to get up eventually.

 

I seem to recall Liston had the shoulder injury before the fight and wanted a postponement but couldn't get it. Doesn't matter though as I don't believe it had much to do with the stoppage. Liston once fought with a broken jaw and didn't quit , I believe Sonny came to the realization that compared to his opponent he was an old man who hadn't been particularly active for years , drank heavily ,and trained even less and was faced with speed and movement he'd never seen. Had it continued Sonny would have been beaten, blinded ,humiliated and probably Tko'ed he chose to avoid that. The rematch was just a fixed fight, anyone with eyes knows that.

 

That one was bad. I was just thinking that he was lucky that Ali did his histrionics. Imagine if Liston did that hideous roll and let himself be counted out while Ali was waiting patiently in a neutral corner? Would easily be the most cringe worthy moment in boxing championship history.

 

He did tell Dundee to cut his gloves off, but Dundee wasn't having it.

 

It's definitely one of them as it is. His quote that it was not a hard punch and he was off balance, at least seems a bit more honest then when he said it was a good punch and he was caught cold, which seems to me like he's trying to excuse such a lamentable performance.

 

Ali was actually screaming for him to get up, saying " Nobody's gonna believe this sh#t? . He'd heard the rumors of a fix too and now he was seeing it.

 

Yeah, nothing to say about the knock down. No reason to think that wasn't legit, but it was just a flash KD.

But two minutes in and Ali had already landed two strong rights that shook Liston and hadn't be able to do more than some gracing punches. He could read the script and didn't fancy staying around until the end.

 

No, a torn muscle was the diagnoses. Why they were waving around an X-ray to try and show it I have no idea since X-rays don't show muscle injuries.

Well, actually I have kind of an idea.

For a muscle injury it would have to be an MRI and that wasn't invented until the 70's.

 

I think Liston needs to rated on these things. As it is a huge aspect in the ATG dIscussions.

Go back to the general you clown. People with "little heart" don't make it half as far as Liston did. They don't fight through broken jaws, or broken noses.
