Yep, Marciano sucked. Charles was an ATG fighter. One of the 5 greatest fighters of all time. Even at heavyweight, you probably had to be one of the 15 best ever in order to defeat him.
Marciano stated he could not avoid Louis's jabs, "I just had to take them". That doesn't mean he sucked, it just means he was vulnerable to left jabs. Charles was not an ATG heavyweight imo and I defy anyone to produce a respected boxing writers ratings that state he was.
I said it would take about the 15-20 best heavyweights at their best to beat him. Charles is one of the 5 greatest fighters who ever lived, in my opinion.
That doesn't qualify him as an ATG heavyweight. And what you actually said was 15 heavyweights, not 15 to 20. "Even at heavyweight, you probably had to be one of the 15 best ever in order to defeat him."
Obviously the second .. I think I can name forty heavyweights that would have clearly beaten that Louis if not more. He was an old 37. Still sound but slow, decent size but weak legs .. easy to hit, fast to tire and only a shell of his former power. It was a very weak era of small heavyweights.
Louis did not look great in that fight but do you mean this guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkJZkwGNK94
Bummy, why not show Metcer icing Morrison or goingbtoevtomtoevw Lewis ? Do you gage Marciano by being badly staggered twice by the legendary Ted Lowry ? Of course not.
Lowry was without doubt a decent and tough campaigner who could hold his own with most guys of his era. No shame in that. Mercer was hot and cold but a worthy guy of his own era and around the elite for a time. Comeback Louis was about Mercer level. The greatest heavyweight who ever lived had declined to a lower level but was still decent, active, winning at top level and in good shape. If you can think of so many heavyweight contenders who could have beat comeback joe Louis you are entitled to think that but it's the same number of men from history who would probably beat guys like Marcer in my opinion.
Louis adapted his jab against Marciano into a step off jab to find room. It was not the full power jab he exhibits against Beshore even if he still had it. The crowding presure exhausted comeback Louis against Marciano and the smothering pace took away the room and time comeback Louis needed to set himself. It's easy to say Louis was bad against Rocky but There was only so much a great fighter in his prime could let an old Louis do. Rocky had a good corner he shut down a good fighter who used to be great. Let's not kid ourselves that most contenders would beat that Louis.
Which emphasises my point I think.:good Can you imagine Rocky coming into Holmes 's or Ali's jab? Or more poignantly a prime Louis's?
I'll put these forward as possibles: Harry Wills Sam Langford Joe Jeannette Sam McVey George Godfrey Larry Gains Tommy Farr Eddie Machen Zora Folley Cleveland Williams Joe Bugner Ron Lyle Doug Jones Clarence Henry Earnie Schaaf John Ruiz Earnie Shavers Jimmy Young Chris Byrd Bob Baker Ike Ibeabuchi Ray Mercer Carl Williams Razor Ruddock Andrew Golota Gerry ****ey Alphabet boys: Tony Tubbs Tony Tucker Tommy Morrison Mike Dokes Herbie Hide Shannon Briggs John Tate Gerrie Coetzee Corrie Sanders Greg Page Mike Weaver Ken Norton ErnieTerrell David Tua
That's a good list. Twenty of those guys held belts.i'm not sure I would bet much money on the ones who did not hold belts at one time. Especially not Ernie Schaff, Cleveland Williams and Larry Gains.
well I seen Holmes get dropped badly by Snipes right hand I can only imagine a Rocky right....Ali had a great weapon in the jab but had trouble with the hook and even old Archie 7-8 years after Marciano was able to land as well as ole Henry, Jones, Frazier....I guess every has there days....Louis admittedly did not look good in this fight and was past prime for sure but he still was beating contenders
