EIther Sam or Joe J.. AREN'T beating the Jess that beat Johnson. So while Jess isn't the best HW champ ever and had a pretty lackluster HW reign... That day... I don't think any of the top contenders beats either Johnson or Jess

I disagree there. Jess was leagues behind them in talent. I don't even think he'd beat Battling Jim Johnson to be honest.

He outlasted a faded legend and he gets credit for being the right man at the right time but lets not pretend he was any good.

I agree buddy, Williard isn't the best and certainly one of the worst champions.. but that day under those rules.. he was a MONSTER. You honestly see either Sam or Joe beating him on a fight to the finish.. in that heat.. with his size wearing on them.. I just don't see it. He was the man for the job that day.

Battling Jim drew with Jeff Clark , kod Arthur Pelkey, and beat Joe Jeannette in 1915.

This footage of the fight shows Jack is carrying a spare tire around his middle.

I don't see any other fighter besides Jess beating Johnson that day nor do I see any of them beating jess either. Jess simply wouldn't be denied that day.. you ask him to beat any of the black fighters of the day to reclaim the title for the "white race" and make it a to the finish bout... he beats each and every one of them.

Not so sure about that....Willard beat Johnson, Primo beat Sharkey, both by KO....Both men had tremendous heart, Willard getting up vs Jack and Carnera getting up vs Louis and Baer....There were great 6"2 sub 200lb fighter then, who were natural Heavyweights with no enhancers...Louis weighed 230 when he stopped Valdes in 1 rd. in an EXH. back then it was the bigger they are the harder they fall....Today not only the Klitschko's bigger but they are the best conditioned fighters around but we don't have a Joe Louis around either

"had a terrific chin and heart"

He certainly showed heart against Dempsey and also Johnson.

but chin. He went down from Dempsey's first punch. Dempsey stopped him in three. Firpo in eight. It is a fair point that Willard was old and out of shape, but it also is a fair point that Willard wasn't able to last as long against Dempsey and Firpo or give them as much trouble as the ordinary contender Bill Brennan did.

    Joe Cox

Overmatched? Cox had had four fights and had lost three of them. If Willard was overmatched against this fella it doesn't really speak well of him.

Willard was green and perhaps this is an excuse, but this is still a rather heavy blotch on the whole argument that Willard was a really outstandingly tough fighter.

The bottom line is that Willard's best wins next to Jack Johnson don't amount to that much and he didn't stop most of them.

I stick with my point that there is no compelling evidence that Willard had anything more than a rather good chin. That he could "outlast anyone" seems over-the-top against big punchers, as the two big punchers he faced stopped him.

Johnson by the time he fought Willard had gone years without a top punching display.

Carnera lasted longer against Louis and Baer (6 & 11) than Willard did against Dempsey and Firpo (3 & 8). Carnera was younger, but it is food for thought, as Willard is considered having a top chin and Carnera a glass jaw.
