It may not seem it now, with the benefit of more than a decade's hindsight and how the rest of their respective careers played out - but this cruiser unification match, as of when it happened, was the culmination of a crescendo of building anticipation over a few years, and was considered on paper to be a highly competitive battle of devastating punchers atop their game. They both came in with just a single defeat - neither avenged - but with a slew of decent wins, and high KO percentages (Haye a whopping 90%; Maccarinelli with a respectable 72%, boasting as many kayos as Haye did fights).

After the opener, it appeared that a fun and evenly contested slug-fest was indeed underway. The judges were split on the round. For the first two minutes of the second, the pattern continued - with Maccarinelli scoring a bit more precisely, if anything... but then... :scared1

Big ups to Haye for the use of head-feints. Very underrated skill-set, and it here directly set up him landing that big cannonball right behind a halfway-pumped diversionary jab that signaled the beginning of Macca's end. He read the idiosyncrasies of Maccarinelli's reactions to his own upper-body twitches as they squared off at mid-range, and then waited until the gloves lowered just enough to create an opening... :deal:

    I remember this well
I always had Haye winning but genuinely impressed with how it was won and how early he put Enzo away

It was a huge build up at the time. I really couldn't take to Haye back then and was rooting big time for Enzo. Explosive and decisive win though, no question who was the better man.

This one certainly brought a wider appeal to audiences in the UK.

It was generally unknown as to whether the fight would ever come off, because Haye had dipped his toe into the waters, at Heavyweight (pun intended) only to drop back to 200lbs once more for Mormeck - a bout in which he was knocked down, before stopping Mormeck quite emphatically.

After Haye's takedown of Mormeck, I recall Maccarinelli calling Haye out (again) on live television, with Haye making much of his KD at the hands of Mormeck being down to the cruiserweight limit being too much of a struggle for him.

I remember a group of us (family and friends) turning the conversation to this Haye/Maccarinelli, with there being a fair contingent backing the Welshman. But, I felt Haye had quite obviously feigned his cruiserweight struggles and considered that the Mormeck KD had flattered to deceive.

This, in addition to the fact that I think Haye had shown to be in a better class of fighter, generally made me think too many people had been taken in by both fighters, to be honest. Haye's relatively KO of Bonin was not to be ignored either. Regardless of Bonin's level as a heavyweight, power is power and some of the punches with which Haye demolished Bonin carried a lot of it.

My prediction was that it would be nothing short of a miracle if Maccarinelli made it beyond round 3. I backed Haye quite heavily and, much to my delight...

Reminds me of 1st year sixth form. Feel old now!! I was naive and bought into Enzo banging inferior opposition out on ITV. I was proved very wrong as I kept saying I fancied him haha.

I was there and pretty close, the sound of some of those punches was shuddering. I was expecting Macranellis face to face in.
