A lot of people place his prime around the time of the Glen Johnson fight. That was the fight were he showed he was at least 2 levels above a b level fighter. Before that he struggled with the likes of Mercado and Baptist.

I actually had him beating Mercado twice. He dominated him in the rematch. His prime 95-03 imho so therefor I agree with the OP. Jones still beat a very solid Hopkins though and up until yesterday was the only man to do it wide and leave no question.

I had him winning both fights as well but he still struggled during the first fight. I had no problem with him getting a draw especially after seeing that vicious headbutt he hit Mercado with. Maybe the judges handed out a bit of street justice by scoring that fight a draw
Mercado was terrible. He should of dominated him during both fights.
He should of lost the Holmes fight. Disgusting display of contant fouling by Hopkins.

Don't remeber the headbutt but it was Mercado's hometown. Thought he'd get the benefit of the doubt anyways and also the high altitude I hear was tough.

Ok his prime was 97-03. Still beat better fighters than Mercado.

Lowblows were horrible. Every fighter still does what they feel they need to. Cheating just happens to be in his blood:-(.

Can't be bothered trawling this thread, but am I right in assuming the TS is basically saying that Hopkins' prime is any time he didn't lose?

I'd agree with this. From 97-03 he was at his best.

The 114 card was a disgrace. Dawson won all but 3 rounds imo.

Still, only a fool would hold a loss against a 47 year old.

When Hopkins fought RJJ the first time he wasn't in his prime, so you do have a point.

Prime for Prime Jones would've beaten him anyways and he always would've struggled with Dawson. Don't hold yesterday against Hopkins and props for Dawson keeping his cool. Showed his mental strength so in that case I'm glad Hopkins fouled him but....it was....overused to say. I was just smh and laughing throughout.

Prime jones beats pretty much anyone at mw anyways. Only robinson would I favour over jones.

Absolutely no shame in that loss.

That was my point all along. I said his prime was around the time of the Johnson fight because before that he was struggling with guys like Marcado and baptist

    None at all.

And I agreed. Still great fights to watch despite him being pre-prime. Back when Hops was aggressive outside of just fouls and in clinches lol.

I agree with you, except that I still consider Hopkins to be in the last year of his prime against Robert Allen and De La Hoya. In my opinion, 2004 was the last great year Hopkins had.

For me, it became apparent that Hopkins was no longer in his prime during the Eastman fight, in early 2005. Although Hopkins won the fight, it was clear to me that he was no longer the dominant boxer he was when he defeated Glen Johnson and Felix Trinidad.

You think Roy Jones beats Marvin Hagler at MW? :patsch

It's hard to pin down when Hopkins prime was, throughout his career, he's struggled decent 2 handed fighters with speed, who were his size (Jones, Taylor, Calzaghe)
