No worries, there have been some who have had a go at me for 'only rating fighters from my time' When I was talking about Greb I think atsch :rofl And my knowledge is not all that, I just don't make the mistake of commenting on things I don't know about :good
In my humble opinion the winner of that fight was number 1 for a short time. Gman had already knocked out mugabi and jackson twice to become the best mw in the world. Before this fight jones and benn were close 1 and 2 imo. Benn overtook jones with this victory but then jones took top spot back with his next victory himself. Behind the tragedy it's easy to forget just how good this fight was and how meaningful this victory was for benn; gman was one of the best of his day on his day.
For me its this win that puts benn at the head of the domestic pack...and yup, Jones was a phenom, and its possible that, to paraphrase angelo dundee, benn couldn't have hit him in the ass with a handful of sand, but I always wonder what if......
Yeah yeah and I suppose hopkins was green and toney was weight drained. Making excuses for a loss is poor form imo. Gman was a beast and a phenomenal talent.
@Lufcrazy: I'm not making excuses I'm merely saying why those wins aren't as impressive at face value when you see those two names. These are facts. I dunno' about phenomenal talent either, massive, big puncher, solid, competent boxer. A very good, scary guy. There have been many. Hopkins was not the great fighter he would become. And James Toney had a horrible time making the limit. For someone who twists decisions and personal preference all the time, not to judge the context of every fighters wins is in fact bad form on your part. Assuming that I wouldn't treat Roy Jones in the same way is also bad form on your part and suggests a lack of familiarity with my posting style. Fair enough, but just to set the record straight: Mugabi was a natural light middle and washed up, had suffered a bad eye injury and had no punch resistance. Jackson was also smaller, well past his physical best but still capable and dangerous (in the first fight) Good win, good fight.
I don't see Benn beating Jones back then, infact i don't see anyone beating Jones back then. But i definitely don't see Jones stopping Benn early. I just can't see it. Like i said earlier, Benn's chances of beating Jones were zero after he left everything in the ring with McClellan. He had nothing left after that. @lufc Well Hopkins certainly wasn't the fighter he'd become, and yes Toney was weight drained. Also i don't forget how good a win that was for Benn.
Going through the whole divisional history I have a hard time picking anyone to beat jones. Jones really was something special at that weight. I just think in 95 at the time of this victory benn takes a slight lead in my rankings but then jones restores parity in his next fight. Damn jones v liles and benn at that weight would have been tremendous.
Nice response. You accuse me of bad form, then when I show that isn't true you just dismiss my post. Good form :good
En contraire i'm not dismissing it; I liked the way you articulated the post. Regarding decisions, if research points to a bad call i'm willing to call it a bad call. I don't believe in crediting one man with a decision if I don't believe they deserved it whether it's close or clear. Personal preference is limited to frank bruno i'm afraid :-( although I went through a phase of hating on mab after he burst my naz bubble. The victories scored by gman at 160 were enough for him to rise above his peers whilst he was there, imo. Maybe I went overboard calling him a phenomena but I think he was a bit special. I'm not sure how different hopkins became physically speaking but i'm happy I saw enough in their fight to suggest had jones stayed at the weight, hopkins would never have been champion at mw and that's a scary thought. The toney victory is phenomenal imo, noone should be able to clown a great fighter with such ease. Hopefully my form has improved with this post
Benn is one of my favourite fighters but even after this win i couldn't put him above Jones mate. Like you say he was just special. If Benn was to fight Jones it would have had to come before McClellan, because they was no way he could of beat him after that. He had nothing left, especially at that type of level. Obviously we wanted to see the fight after Benn beat McClellan but in hindsight, i'm glad he never got that fight. He was finished. Yeah Liles was quality too.
