Yeah that's the quandry isn't it with boxing. Guys go through hell to reach the top but once there find they aren't as good as they once where. A sad example was nate campbell who fought the fight of his life against diaz to take the lw crown but unfortunately his body had had enough and he could never make weight again. Such a shame.
I agree with all of this, but when really dissect the value of a single win these things have to be taken into account IMO. Still quality wins though. I use the word twist in the wrong way, I was merely saying that I was surprised you would take the decision in account but not the context of the win as well. When ranking fighters I try to look as much as I can into the circumstances of the win. This is why the Virgil Hill win is not as impressive as it could be, but still way better than Floyd Mayweathers win over Zab Judah.
Context is vital. The win over john set him up a a force in the division. His win over jackson elevated him to the top. What else did we have? Johnson being robbed every other fight, two young prospects competing for a vacant belt? I don't think quality wise anything that year tops the first victory over julian. The win over hill for jones impresses me more than dm's over hill.
Yeah it looks like we do disagree. It was the highest point he reached maybe, but he was around the top level years before and like i said it wasn't the only gruelling fight he was in.
3xno.1 Luf is referring to Benn reaching the no.1 spot, not denying he was top-drawer beforehand:good
Cool. It's not the impression i got from the last 2 replies he gave us. He shoulda said that. Maybe he already did. :think It's late and i'm tired.:good
And I agree (sorta, not sure this took him to no.1 SMW but see where you're coming from) :good He was never the no.1 @ 160, so this was indeed the closest.
Although I think it did it's only an "in the moment" promotion because in jones very next fight he kicked arse and parity was restored. Yeah his mw run looks decent in hindsight but he was never really in the reckoning at all and wasn't really regarded as a world title holder back then.
