did emanuel steward make hearns duck him? did hagler and duran also dodge him? if he fought hagler what would have happened? as a middle weight how do u rate him? would he have beaten eubank and benn in 1991? was he in his prime when he fought james toney? if he was younger would he have beaten toney? how did u score the toney fights?
Did Emmanuel Steward make Hearns duck him? No. Did Hagler and Duran also dodge him? No. If he fought Hagler what would have happened? He would've lost. As a Middleweight how do you rate him? Highly, but not as highly as I rate him at Jr. Middleweight. Would he have beaten Eubank and Benn in 1991? Eubank would've been a tougher test, but I think McCallum pulls out a close one. McCallum stops Benn late. Was he in his prime when he fought James Toney? No, he was on the decline (though still an excellent fighter, in the first fight anyway, by the second he'd declined noticeably) and above his JMW prime. If he was younger would he have beaten Toney? Yes, I think he won the second fight by a point anyway (when he'd noticeably declined from even the first fight) after losing the first by a point. How did you score the Toney fights? See above.
did emanuel steward make hearns duck him? no but mccalum was going to be fighting duran but then hearns fought him instead did hagler and duran also dodge him? duran kind of ducked him but he got more money for fighting hearns so anyone would have rather fought hearns if he fought hagler what would have happened? lost a UD as a middle weight how do u rate him? as sweet pea says would he have beaten eubank and benn in 1991? i think he would hae beaten both of them as eubank didnt like bodyshots and mccalum would probably get a UD. i think he would stop a tired benn late on after his body attack. was he in his prime when he fought james toney? havent saw the fight but i have reah he was if he was younger would he have beaten toney? going from my knowledge and not the actual fight. Yes how did u score the toney fights? i ddint
the toney vs mccalum match ups were awesome .. i think if you put them in there 10 times you'd have 5/5 for each .. their styles are way contrasting
Mike was not really dodged by Marvin and Tommy, they were just established Middleweights when at his finest Mike was a jr Middle. Mike was better than most give him credit for , he was a great technician, and his nickname was very well earned. He would have beaten Eubank but it would not have been an easy fight for anyone, Benn would have been the easier fight, but neither a breeze. He was declining when he ran into Toney and later Roy J Jr.. Mike always loved being an unheralded underdog, and loved to upset the odds.. The Curry fight is something i watch with a great smile , i valued Don but it was Mikes time to shine that night and he delivered when it counted the most.. I was around Mike when he was training with Stacey Mckinley and Crocodile with a friend of mine who passed a while back (Al Williams) and now he helps train my friend and heavyweight Duncan Dokiwari...... The man is a pleasure to talk with he is a fountain of wisdom.......
1. Yes, I believe so. 2. Duran maybe, but I dont think Hagler. There was never big demand for Hagler-McCallum, plus at that point Hagler just wanted big fights. 3. Very good middleweight, but arguably the best junior middleweight of all time. 4. Hell yes! McCallum would have stopped Benn late, and beaten Eubank clear on points. Eubank wanted NO parts of McCallum. 5. No, he was on the downside when he fought Toney, but was still a very good fighter. 6. I dunno cause his prime weight was never 160. At his very best he might have outpointed James, but it still woulda been a close fight. James was a great fighter. 7. Never seen all them, but the first fight which was a draw I had Toney winning. It was a great great fight.
did emanuel steward make hearns duck him? No. McCallum was the no1 contender for the WBA light-middleweight title, not the WBC title that Hearns held. It would have been difficult for Steward, Hearns, and McCallum to come together to make the fight as they were all from the Kronk. did hagler and duran also dodge him? McCallum was due to fight Duran for the WBA light-middleweight title, but Steward asked him to step aside so Hearns could fight him instead. It was a bigger fight with more money on the table for Duran. IMO Duran took the tougher fight on paper at the the time. When Duran was stripped, McCallum won the vacant title against Mannion later the same year. Hagler never ducked him. I can't mind McCallum calling him out at all. McCallum was establishing himself as a world champion around 85-86 when Hagler was on the slide. And with Hagler fighting Hearns and Mugabi during those years, I would hardly say they were easy fights on paper for Marvin. if he fought hagler what would have happened? Hagler would probably have beaten McCallum on points in a reasonably close fight. He would have had a better chance during his prime days at middleweight rather than an immediate step up from 154lbs during 84-85 when he was relatively inexperienced at world level. as a middle weight how do u rate him? Reasonably high H2H. And as a great in the division, not very high due to his average accomplishments at the weight. would he have beaten eubank and benn in 1991? Yes, both. Eubank would have given him a better fight than Benn. Eubank was smarter than Benn, used the full ring, and was far better laterally and on the backfoot. was he in his prime when he fought james toney? No. McCallum was in his prime during the late 80's as a light-middleweight. He was competitive against Toney throughout the 24 rounds they fought at the weight. Still a brilliant fighter considering he was 34/35 years old at the time. if he was younger would he have beaten toney? If he was younger, well considerably younger, he would have been a light-middleweight. I don't think the earlier McCallum of the Watson and Graham fights at the same weight would have faired any better against Toney. how did u score the toney fights? Can't mind.
1 more question based on his stellar achievments at 154/160 and the decent run he had at 175 where do u rank him on the list of Top 50 ATGs or does he even qualify for such status?
1 last question is his achievments overshaddowed due to the time frame of his career? He isnt really talked about i dont understand why? beating Julian jackson in 2 rounds is all u need to know about him
Top 50 is stretching it big time in the grand scheme of things. He'd rank somewhere in the top 70-80 though.
1) I didn't think so, I think Hearns was just eyeing bigger fish at that time (Benitez, Duran, Hagler). 2) Not IMO, same reason as above. 3) I think Hagler would've had a bit too much. 4) Good, solid fighter, but falls short of being among the all-time greats there. 5) Benn, yes. Benn's chin and stamina would let him down within 6 rounds IMO. Eubank is harder to tell, but I'd favor McCallum's greater workrate and variety of punches there. 6) No, I don't think he was ever in his prime as a middleweight. I think he spent too long in the amateurs and trying to make a name for himself at jr. middle. 7) I thought he did beat him in the 2nd fight, so my answer to that is yes. 8) The first fight was close and hard to score IMO, and probably a fair draw. The second fight I thought was a clear win for McCallum, and a blatant robbery. The third fight, Toney dominated down the stretch as I recall and was a clear winner.
One hard Jamaican Homeboy. Loved this guy as a kid after watching him taking one of my favorites ( Watson ) to school . My kind of fighter .
What is Mike doing these days? With his knowledge and calm demeanor, it seems like he could make a good trainer.
