Marciano tried his hand at television and radio work, but the old street fire occasionally surfaced, such as in 1964, when he was in Miami doing radio spots for the Sonny Liston-Muhammad Ali fight. "Rocky went to the gym where Liston trained," Duva said. "He was supposed to interview him, but Liston kept teasing Rocky, saying, 'You wouldn't last two rounds with me.' Rocky stayed calm, but he was getting mad. Finally, Rocky said, 'Get me some trunks, some shoes, and gloves and let's see what happens.' Rocky was serious. Liston's people ran in like they were doing the 100-yard dash, grabbed Sonny and took him out of the gym." More here: http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3529752
Good stuff. I do think Rocky at 40-ish and @ nine years from his last fight, is probably fortunate it did not go through. Sent from my NS-P10A6100 using Tapatalk
Rocky had a famous incident with Ali while they were filming rounds for the " Super fight " . At one point the playful Ali knocked Marciano's toupee off. Rocky warned Ali not to do that again. Ali did, then Marciano ripped a hard body shot to Ali's midsection. Needless to say, it never happened again.
A prime, conditioned Liston would kill a bloated, old Marciano. He would tear him apart in every way, shape and form. Sonny was being smart to not take up Marciano on his offer and thereby incurring further wrath from the white press for destroying their hero.
Notice...it is Lou Duva telling the story to ESPN. Of course, everyone knows Liston quit on his stool against Clay, while even...or ahead, on the scorecards.
It is OK to be sceptical, but you have to take it seriously, if it is backed by a contemporary source. You cant dismiss if because it doesnt fit your world view.
Still as dumb as ever, nobody said or thought he had a chance with a prime in condition Liston, only you in your mean spirited ways come up with stupidity. As I recalled there was no bad race implications with Liston, so why bring race into this?
Was not the press dominated by whites and attempting to appeal to whites? Did not the press make out Liston to be some boogey man since the days when he dethroned Patterson? So, the least we can say of you is that you recall incorrectly.
I seem to remember Patterson being black. Perhaps the issue with Liston was that he was a mafia thug? Even so, he press were actually taking a liking to Liston, before he lost the title!
I didn't take you for being so dense but then again, the US ain't your country. Once the inevitability of an African American sport was realized, white society had to choose between good, white-appeasing Blacks and hardened "incorrigible" Blacks.... and if the fighters didn't exactly fit these roles on their own the press made sure they did.
