This is probably going to sound quite insane, but I was hanging out with my friend, Bob, who is a physicist, and we were having a few drinks. Somehow the subject of boxing came up. Bob is, at best, a casual fan, so I wasn't too surprised when he asked me this. He said, and I quote, "What do you suppose would happen if we got, say, someone of Mickey Rourke's caliber, when he was in his 'prime,' whatever and whenever that may have been, brought him to the future in a time machine, and had him face Pacman." At this point I gave him a look. He waved his hand, dismissing me, and continued, "Now, I'm not talking about catchweights. Say we have Pacman at welter and Rourke at cruiser. Would the size disparity at all even out the obviously large gap in skill? Or would Pacquiao simply use his superior speed and footwork to decision Rourke, perhaps even TKO him?" I started to respond, but another wave of the hand cut me short. "Now what if, for example, we were to take this a step further and allow Rourke to use 3 ounce gloves and have Manny use 10? Who would win this fight?" I honestly didn't know what the hell to say to this. What do you guys think?
Okay then. Let's take it a few steps further, shall we? Substitute Rourke for the version of Holmes who fought Butterbean. If that's not good enough for you, trade up to the version who fought Holyfield.
Conditioning, experience and skill trumps size all day... Short of a one-punch KO, which is highly improbable, Rourke gets outclassed- small vs big gloves, it doesn't matter. I've seen similar things happen in the gym plenty (on a lesser skill and experience level than Pac, obviously), and it's happened to me personally. I was on the **** end of the stick, or Rourke's position, when I sparred a 135 lb amateur fighter and, while I was no chump, I was 195 and not in the best shape... I did well enough in sparring in general, and in this case, hit the kid with a beaut of a right counter over his jab, but that was about it... He ended up having a field day at my expense, not hurting me at all, I just couldn't do much about what he was doing... If it was a fight and gone on longer, I would have completely gassed and been stopped most likely. That's a microcosm of what would happen in this case, I'm afraid.
In this case, Holmes has enough residual survival skills and tactics to big-man Rourke and manhandle him.
Silly question ! Example : In 1941 Terry Young a 133 pound lightweight friend took his bigger pal Rocky Graziano,to Stillmans gym to meet his trainer Whitey Bimstein. Rocky was the best street fighter there was at the time.Well Bimstein put the 133 pound Terry Young in with themuch bigger Graziano, and proceeded to beat the hell out of Rocky. I hope that answers your question...
we use to have a golden glove 140 pounder who went 6-1-1 as a pro..he use to beat all the fighters in my gym in sparring accept for my brother who was a pretty good 200 pounder. Mickey Rourke at his best was not that ****ing good..many of his pro wins where likely dive fights...you can watch them on youtube and see guys dropping from punches that did notl and....rourke at his best was not much bigger then Margorrito....he would get DESTROYED by pac...honestly i think even if you give him mma gloves and pac 16 ounce sparring gloves pac still KO"s him fast and brutally.
