Stracey defended his WBC welterweight title against perennial contender Hedgemon Lewis. This was a chance for Stracey to defend his title on home turf and enjoy the adulation of boxing fans who were starved of success in the 1970s. For Lewis, it was another chance blown.

    Hi Noel.
I was there that night, and you are right it was indeed a world class defense for Stracey, we all thought he would do the same to Palomino, but sadly it was not to be, Carlos turned out to be a classy and worthy champ, one of my favs, often thought how him and Basilio would have worked out ? that said, I think his winning the European title from the extremely strong and imposing Menetrey was also a feat, especially over in France, the muscular Menetrey was a heavy fav as I remember, but Stracey just walked him down, and pummeled him to defeat, mighty impressive, also on the double header was Finnegan fighting Bouttier for the title, again another brilliant performance from the underdog, night started off in a pub in Hackney, till 11-30 then down to Chinatown for a slap up evening meal, then off to the pictures , saw the fights via CCT, as I often did with fights that were abroad, then a cab back to mum and dads, fall into bed around 3-30am, then up at 5am for work, happy days....
    stay safe buddy.

Fine performance from John. A very good, skilled world champion. I talk to him on a regular basis and have always found him to be very personnable and down to earth.

I sometimes wonder what might have happened if Stracey had had more time to rest between defences.

    Hi Buddy.
After the defeat by Lewis, that very subject was raised, and Lawless, Duff, and co were heavily criticised for Straceys busy schedule ( well at that time ) also the style that the Lawless stable employed, the doctrine being taught by him and all his staff was the straightforward, grind the opponent down approach, most of the camp, Gardner, Flint, Magri, Batten, etc, were all schooled in that style, which was reaping rewards at domestic and Euro level, but was exposed at the top echelon of fighters sometimes, on point, I believe Palomino would have beaten Stracey no matter when they fought, as I have said, he turned into a very formidable champ.
    nice chatting, stay safe.

A point Stracey has made often. Terry Lawless and Mickey Duff needed the money.
