This guy didn't win a title and was beaten by Williams 8/7 8/7 and 9/6 . Freddie Dawson Global ID 13866 sex male birthdate 1924-01-28 death date 1992-06-07 division lightweight stance orthodox country United States residence Chicago, Illinois, United States birth place Thomasville, Arkansas, United States birth name Freddie Dawson Elston won 102 (KO 47) + lost 14 (KO 2) + drawn 4 = 121 rounds boxed 950 KO% 38.84
The more i learn about Daswon, the more i think he was ATLEAST Williams equal despite the losses. Very underrated, one of the best not to win the title.
How do you figure that? Not only did Williams win the series 3-0-1 (including a KO in their first fight), but he proved himself far more conclusively on the whole, defeating far superior opposition than Dawson ever managed.
Sorry, I meant in a h2h sense, Dawson was KO'd in their first encounter in his 2nd year as a pro against a much more experienced Williams, no shame in that. The remaining bouts were quite hotly contested with Dawson very unlucky to not get the nod atleast once. Both fantastic fighters, in terms of ability quite close, in terms of recognition at times its seems they're miles apart. But your right, Williams did have a far more impressive career as a whole.
Dawson was jobbed twice against Williams. The first fight he was easily winning until getting caught. The fourth fight was close but Williams does have a legitimate claim to winning it. The 2nd and 3rd fights were won by Dawson atleast according to about every newspaper out there.
I agree mate, Freddie Awesome Dawson was something, as tough as nails and unlucky to have Williams around.
Dawson is well known in Australia, at a time when Australian boxing had it's best ever depth of talent rFeddie Dawson beat every single top Aussie fighter he fought, including the great southpaw Vic Patrick who knocked Dawson out of the ring but it was Dawson who eventually knocked out Patrick in a fight for the ages. Dawson had many torrid fights here but he was as hard as the cables on a suspension bridge and was a LW of true class. Dawson would be a superstar today.
TheGreatA, you are the ****ing man. No doubt about it. I forgot to commend you for the Jose Napoles compilation you put up, but what you've done here overshadows even that. Now it's available for all to see - was I lying? Anyone? Ain't the knockout just spectacular?
He's sort of half way between. Or exactly half way between. I'm so happy this footage is out there for people to see now. Everyone knows Williams was a great puncher when in full flight, we've all seen the Beau Jack stoppage, but outside of that there hasn't been a lot of mainstream footage of his abilities. This Gatica footage is much more than just confirmation. It's telling us that Williams really was in the upper echelon. Such an impressive display.
You can find Williams second fight with Enrique Bolanos on YT. I seen all 3 of their fights live starting with their first fight in 1946..
Yeah I know mate, I used to own that fight. A good exhibition of refined stalking from Williams. I think I remember McVey saying he'd seen one of the other Bolanos fights on film. The third I think. Anyone know about this?
I see. Seems to strengthen my stance that Ike's boxing skills weren't really up to par in the grand scheme.
I think his footwork and ability to get set to punch were somewhat of a weakness of his. Once he figured the opponent out, it was just a matter of time though. http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...,4280619&dq=freddie+dawson+ike+williams&hl=en http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...,1163927&dq=freddie+dawson+ike+williams&hl=en
