How will this generation of MMA be perceived in 30 years time in a future Classic MMA Forum ???

Do you think that guys like GSP, AS, etc, will be viewed like we see Armstrong, Robinson, etc in Boxing ??

Mainly as the transition from the NHB era of the specialists to the true beginning of MMA as a fighting style in it's own right

Guy's like GSP, Anderson, and maybe Fedor will always be ranked high in an ATG sense, but others maybe eclipsed by future talent but have no doubt made their mark. Guys like Big Nog, Chuck, Hughes, Cro Cop, Wandy, Hendo ect fit into this category imo

I think Anderson is truly one of the only ones that everyone will look back in thirty years and say "jesus, he was ****ing awesome, a true legend". Maybe Fedor too.

You don't think there gonna think that about GSP?
Them 3 stand alone as the greatest of there generation!
Bones and Aldo are the new guys who I believe will take there place, I think we're lucky to be here to watch these 5 fighters because these for me are like the Robinson', Ali' and tysons of mma!

I can´t see how MMA fighters can be better or more complete than GSP, AS.....and I think we always will have guys like Shields, with amazing abilities in one game and awful in other....we´ll always have 1 or 2 guys like that, it´s normal......so I don´t think we will see guys like Shields as unskilled in comparison with top fighters from 2040...it´s simple impossible you be 100% great in every aspect, guys like GSP or AS or BJ Penn (at his best) are simply the best a fighter can be, the most complete a fighter can be IMO.....
I think at this point the sport is developed enough to be like this for years....

I agree Vic, the bar is set to high with regards to what people expect to see in the future. We have seen a steady improvement in the mid card guys abilities, but sometime people are expecting guys like GSP, BJ Jon Jones ect to become the norm. It simply will not happen imo

The ''Elite'' wont get much better in 2040 than the guys we are seeing now.

Yeah......a good MMA fighter today like a Luke Rockhold for example....he trains with the best of wrestling, with the best of Muay Thai/Kickboxing, with the best of grappling, etc.....and everyone is like that today......what will change in the future ? I simply don´t see.....

Great posts Stoo and Vic.....unlike archaic boxing, this era of MMA has benefitted from widespread knowledge and cross training....hard to see fighters becoming much more advanced from the likes of Jon Jones and GSP now. But it will be interesting to see for sure.

    This.

I honestly don't think GSP will rank that highly in the long run. His now consistent lack of finishing his opponents will hurt him, especially in an era when guys like Anderson, Jones, Aldo and Fedor are demolishing almost everyone they come across.

GSP is fighting higher level guys more consistently than either Anderson, Aldo or Fedor. Jones is a freak who's, for lack of a better term, clearing out the dead wood of the last generation in the LHW's

WW is a strong division and GSP has had two bad nights, one of them against another ATG in Hughes who was in his prime and Georges was still green. Remains to be seen whether Jones has an off night so to speak

The beginning of true MMA. The beginning or MMA as a fighting style itself. There are very few specialists at the top, anymore, you have to be a well rounded fighter to make it.

It's still probably early days for 'true MMA' even now.

Was watching UFC 19 the other day and had forgotten how 'The Big Chief' Andre Roberts had turned his back on Gary Goodridge, walked over to the mesh and tapped his leg to signify he'd had enough - all inside the first minute of the bout. It was accepted then. But image the furore if such a thing happened now. We may look back in 10 years time at what's happening now and think similar thought to the Chief tapout.
