Wills was already on record as turning down or ignoring big money offers to fight Gibbons and Tunney; that part wasn't "made up." Gibbons had been aggressively pushing for a fight with Wills for at least a couple of years.

Gibbons was the #2 HW contender when he fought Tunney, behind only Wills. Godfrey wasn't even in the top 5 then, or even thought all that much of in general.

I don't know enough about boxing history to answer most your questions but I'll say I think it's pretty unlikely Tunney was a racist simply because he was quite intelligent and well read. Racism is almost always predicated more or less directly on false assumptions and faulty logic.

 

Maybe both stats speak for themselves?

I don't think David Irving is a smart guy at all, and as for being well read I very seriously doubt he could answer basic questions on any academic subject outside 20th century history (if even that).

Wagner's antisemitism was mostly... "aesthetic" for lack of a less incongruous choice of word, and Nietzsche broke off relations with him because this offended his intellect rather than his morality.

I don't know much about Lindbergh, but I'd bet my life I could back him into a logical corner very quickly. I've spent more time than I ever should have bothered to arguing with so called "race realists" online, and in my experience they are *always* incompetent if you grant in arguendo that they're sincere.
No exceptions.

But in any case I'm not quite saying that it's impossible for a highly intelligent person to be a racist (though no one has ever cited examples to my satisfaction) just that intelligence is inversely correlated with racism.
(Unless by racism you mean subtle unjustified biases, in which case we're all "racist" in every possible direction.)
