There really weren't any credible black opponents while Tunney was champion, he could have met Godfrey, before he beat Dempsey but afterwards Godfrey was in decline. Before he was the number one contender? Clark,Norfolk,Wills of course.I don't think he would have had any real problems with the aging Norfolk or Clark.Wills rightly took the view that he had earned his shot why should he risk it against Tunney?

ps. For all his intellect I don't believe Russell was a particularly nice human being.

Wilson had the movie "The Birth of a Nation" screened at the White House and praised the movie to the skies.
If you don't know anything about this movie, look it up. It's the most racist thing imaginable. It's also a great movie in the sense that the director (D.W. Griffith) basically invented filming techniques that were unknown beforehand.

There is zero basis for supposing that Wilson’s racism was really just a class-based bias. Plenty of articles in recent years have addressed his bigoted views and actions at length.

I've seen it a few times, I am a cinema buff.Yes it is a great movie, but the premise of the plot with the Klan portrayed as heroes would only appeal to Red Necks and a certain poster here.

He failed the IQ test for the military. Ali recanted his previous hard stance on the races and everyone is aware of it,everyone except you apparently.
Ali gave tons of cash away to worthy causes many of them white such as a children's home in Germany. On hearing he had his pocket picked he reimbursed Teddy Waltham who had refereed his fight with Mildenberger. Ali was a great pal of Reg Gutteridge's and visited him in hospital when he was very ill.
You are talking bollocks once again.

Oh so now he was only racist when he and you want him to be, I suggest you go and watch his very interesting views on the infamous Parkinson interviews. Racism only counts when it's against blacks I suppose........

I could name plenty of black fighters that have white friends that have also used racial slurs against white opponents, is that not "racist" enough for you?

    Black Lives Matter........ GTFOH!!!

By the way I believe that most people including fighters, aren't racist at all. Racism is just a cop-out, the real issue is anger and self-righteousness.

People hate others because they are hateful people not because they are racist, I'm sick and tired of everybody jumping on the bandwagon.

If that can be confirmed, it would seem pretty damning on its face, but I could imagine a context I could place around that clause that would make it far more innocuous; indeed something more like what McVey just said. With a quick search I couldn't turn up any results for that clause with either "cracking" or "crackling".

He supposedly got a score of 78 (I say "supposedly" only because I haven't confirmed this with a primary source). My IQ is more than twice that, but I think it's pretty clear Ali was someone with some pretty unusual cognitive abilities, even if they wouldn't necessarily show up on an IQ test. It may be that his strengths lied in what's called system one cognition as opposed to system two, or that he had (say) undiagnosed dyslexia which would act as a drag on his test performance without actually saying much about his real abilities. If you look at how he handled himself with William F Buckley or those Harvard students, any test that says this is a moron provides evidence of its own limitations.

Or maybe we should just be more cautious and precise when we call someone racist. Ali, when judged on the totality of his life and actions, damn sure is not what falls into my definition of a racist.

I had once a roommate who was from Jamaica, considered himself some kind of visionary social philosopher, and wanted to reintroduce Marcus Garvey's "repatriation" proposal. (It was actually from him that I learned this term.) He was deeply preoccupied with race and, how shall I put it, saw this as a far, far more broadly relevant explanatory factor than I did, but he was definitely not a racist in the sense that he had any grievance with or witheld any respect from anyone simply because they were white. He was always fair in his dealings with me, and we got along better than roommates usually do.

I honestly wouldn't give two shits if a black man attempted to racially insult me, it would be like water off a ducks back quite frankly.

I just feel some folk love to play the victim and love attention, man the fcuk up and get on with it I say.

Racial insults used by someone doesn't make them a racist in my view, for the record I don't believe Ali was a racist at all but what's good enough for the goose is good enough for the gander.

"Racial insults used by someone doesn't make them a racist in my view..."

Of course. In a heated altercation people tend to spit out whatever they think will get to you. I was once called "cracker" and "pinky" by a guy I'm pretty sure wasn't racist, as a few weeks later he diplomatically intervened on my behalf to save me from a (probable) ass whipping.
