If you’ve seen this before I’m sorry it’s not a remastered HD copy but this is the best version I’ve seen and it only just appeared in my recommendations.

Good copy. This is how I scored it when I watched the bout about a year ago.

Jimmy Ellis v Jerry Quarry (vacant WBA heavyweight title) California scoring in effect

    Round 1: Even
    Round 2: Ellis
    Round 3: Ellis
    Round 4: Ellis
    Round 5: Quarry
    Round 6: Quarry
    Round 7: Even
    Round 8: Even
    Round 9: Ellis
    Round 10: Ellis
    Round 11: Quarry
    Round 12: Quarry
    Round 13: Quarry
    Round 14: Ellis
    Round 15: Quarry

Total: 6-6 Draw (actual scores: 6-6 Draw, 10-5 and 7-6 Ellis for a majority decision for Ellis)

This was a bit of a dull fight. Ellis would not follow Quarry to the ropes, which drew it to center ring, putting the counter-punching Quarry now as the aggressor. But I think Ellis did himself a disservice there as his lightning-quick right hand always seemed to find Jerry. I would have told him nail him and then get out, but he just drew it back to center ring without doing anything. Also, the rounds Jerry was picking up as the aggressor, he actually didn't do badly at. I always doubted a bit of the broken back theory until doing some research, which did mete out the fact there were broken bones discovered and he was in a body-cast after this fight for some time. He didn't look as mobile as I have seen him in other fights, so this was a contributor to the events that didn't unfold. Again, not a great fight but I still enjoy seeing some of these old historical bouts.

Your cards a lot like mine Scartissue, we also match up with similar thoughts on the fight. I’d like to have seen a rematch with Jimmy Ellis leading and Jerry Quarry healthy. I found this clip today have you seen this?

Real shame Quarry never posponed this fight. I think a fully fit Jerry could have won this. Ellis was a good fighter at his peak here and Angelo

Dundee came up with a great strategy so maybe the fight might have been a bit better but with the same result.

Though seeing how Ellis looked awful in his next bout with a faded Patterson (probably should

have been 1st man to win the heavyweight title 3 times) and then was subsequentedly stopped

by Frazier and then Ali I think Quarry would have won on points and maybe even scored a

    stoppage win late.

From what I remember from Quarry´s biography his father (a horrible human being who

exploited Jerry and his brother Mike, made themspar hard without headgear which must have

contributed to their dementia pugilistica) didn´t want to posponed, I can only guess he thought

Ellis would be an easy night even with an injured back.
