One of Daniel Mendoza's ancestors is Peter Sellers. Sellers maternal grandmother, Benvenida Welcome Mendoza (1855–1932), was of Portuguese-Jewish descent; her grandfather, Mordecai Mendoza (1774–1851), was a first cousin of English prizefighter Daniel Mendoza (1764–1836). Sellers was also a cousin of Talksport radio presenter Mike Mendoza.
Mendoza and Sellers was my guess also. I even read some of Mendoza's fights. Great fighter. Too bad Jackson thrash him pretty badly in there one sided match.
Dempsey, if Mendoza wore a crew cut instead of long locks he might have beaten Gentleman John Jackson, it has been said... P.S. No, I did not see the fight !
Not sure on that though, sure John Jackson pull Mendoza's hair which is of couse a foul, but even before the foul Jackson pretty much was beating and pounded on Mendoza. I though it was more because Jackson was a great big fighter vs a small great little fighter. Mendoza could not deal with the size imo. Blaming the hair pulling is more akind to I guess saying Dempsey would win with out the count, or Douglas would not have gotten up vs Tyson on a normal ten count. I suppose. It played little part imo.
