It is said that a great heavy showdown is the biggest spectacle in boxing, or in sport. Do you believe this? True or false, and your reasoning please.

    -------

False. First, true heavyweight showdowns are few and far between, and my generation of heavies is a huge dissapointment. The last heavyweight fight I truly looked forward to was Tyson vs Lewis. Of the tapes I have of boxing, very little of it is heavyweight. Simply put, I much prefer the smaller boxers, their agility and skill level, and the frequency that the smaller weight classes produce truly great fighters.

To me or as a matter of fact? To me a fight between two amazing fighters on a good day is the biggest spectacle in boxing, regardless of weight class. But in terms of the rest of the world in general, I have to recognize that nothing gets people going for boxing like a great heavyweight fight.

It's still probably the biggest spectacle in boxing largely due to the ignorance of the casual boxing fan and the sporting world.

They see bigger as better, and don't even take into account the fact that the fighters at the lower weights(for the most part) are better in every way. Tyson was the last true spectacle at HW. Holyfield was great as well.

If you'll notice I rarely take part in HW discussions, they just bore the hell out of me aside from a few throughout history, and I honestly just don't care enough to watch that much footage.

    True.

Lewis vs Tyson was the biggest fight in my lifetime, not the best but the biggest.

    For me Yes!

It's always more exciting to watch two big guys with skills and stamina fight it out in the ring. Fights like Tyson/Holy; Lewis/Vitali; Ali/Frazier; comes to mind.

Unfortunately the new breed of HW now . . . cannot fight a full 12 round fights.

I quit following the HW religiously after Tyson and Lewis went out of the scene. The HW is some kind of frustrating now.

Vitali vs Lennox was a great fight. Lennox was out of shape but showed skill, experience, chin, great heart, and determination. Vitali was pretty much at the top of his game and to me he was a very good fighter.

Its a pity for that cut! Even if they had rematched, it wouldn't be the same.

Yeah if they finished that fight though Vitali would look like half Terminator half man today, Lennox ****ed that face up.

*Cue a Klitschko hugger to say Vitali was winning on the cards*

I think when the division is at the top of the sport, as it used to be, a heavyweight title fight IS the event.

But as the heavyweights are now, in a lull, (but gaining ground), and there being so many titleholders (although less than there used to be) a big heavyweight title fight is not in the public eye as it used to be.

But I feel once the titles are unified, and the unfied champion gets more and more exposure, his title defenses will become big events, once again. Maybe not as big as they were in the days of Tyson or ALI, but those obviously were eras that would be hard to match, regardless of WHO the new unified champion is.

I like the heavyweights, esp Vitali and Vlad.

Looking forward to Valouev Vs. Ruiz. Ruiz will wrestle while Valouev will box.

    To me it is...for sure.

But in general , is it true ? I guess it depends on the viewer. And since the majority is always right. (even when that majority used to believe that the earth was flat)...i guess it's useless to debate...it's a matter of taste.

But there's amazing fights in all weight categories.
Last HW fight i was really impressed with, was Liakhovich vs Brewster.

I like Vitali and Vlad. I also love to watch Valouev. I used to buy his take from overseas because of the USTV boycott against Euro fighters.

I remember when Valouev used to fight for only $2,000 per fight.
