Would Cooney's career have turned out differently? He's one vote for Yes. Don had his way with the boxing community in the early 1980's, and was no fool about where and when to make matches.

He would not tolerate a 2nd rate trainer ( as Cooney had ) and would have done all the talking that was needed for the media shy Cooney. Cooney was managed by two clowns.

No, I don't think Cooney beats Holmes in 1982, rather I think King would have waited a bit for Holmes to age. Perhaps Cooney would have fought the defensively poor Weaver first for the WBA belt ( The fight was almost made ), have an easier 1st and 2nd title defense, then meet Holmes at a later date.

I might be minded to favor Weaver over him to be honest.

King would of got him a title. The money would of been huge he would of done everything possible to get weavers belt.He would of fed Jerry a load of stiffs and kept him away from Holmes and anyone else dangerous till a super fight with Larry's could be made about 84 .maybe jerry could win then? The money and hype would be massive with Don laughing all the way to the bank.

I would slightly favor Cooney as Weaver was slow, not much on defense and had a shaky chin. A more winnable fight for Cooney for sure.

Gentleman Gerry and David Tua are the 2 guys that made a big big mistake not signing w/ DKP.

King would have had Gerry in there with guys like Leon Spinks. Scott Ledoux. A ruined John Tate. And so on for his 2 defenses a year for about 3 years.

Could King have kept Gerry off the booger sugar? He didn't have great track record for that with his fighters.

He would have been ruined by being thrown in with other King fighters, but not till after the big payday v. Holmes. King would'nt have risked that payday (for King) being lost . We would have seen some great fights though. He would have lost some and won some against the likes of Tubbs, Page, Witherspoon, Berbick etc.

The problem with the above is Bob Arum controlled the WBA belt.

I agree Tua should have signed with King. He was frozen out. He had to be kicking himself seeing what King did with the inferior John Ruiz.

Kings marketing scheme would have been great . Gerry"The Killer Leprauchan"Cooney

Imagine Cooney walking to the ring with a bright colored rainbow glissering his entrance as he walks out the tunnel throwing coins at everyone in his 6'6 huge outfit .Looking to collect his gold belt.:osvaisacagar:

Don King didn't feed anyone a load of stiffs.

If you signed with Don King back in the day, you had to be prepared to fight all the top 10 heavyweights RIGHT NOW.

A couple fighters actually sued Don King because he threw them in tough the moment he signed them, even if they didn't think they were ready.

That's why heavyweights in the 1980s were fighting for the title with only a handful of wins.

If Cooney had been managed by King, he'd probably have made about $250,000 to fight Holmes, instead of $10 million. And faced any number of guys, from a pool that included Renaldo Snipes, Trevor Berbick, Greg Page, Quick Tillis, Bernardo Mercado, Earnie Shavers, Leon Spinks, Mike Weaver, Tex Cobb, Scott Ledoux, Pinklon Thomas, Bonecrusher, and he'd probably have a few more losses to go with a few more wins.

I don't know if he ever would've won a title, though. If so, he probably would've held it as long as the others did. (Not too long.)

    Wrong.

His managers would have still got him big paydays. They certainly understood money. And a promoter like King certainly knows who his breadwinners are. He would not be matching him against elite fighters. He'd milk the cow for all he could and would've got to the Tyson camp earlier & fed Gerry to him for an all time huge payday. Like in 87. So we're only talking about 2 fights a year, maybe. for what 4 years?

He would not fight Spoon or Page or Dokes or I even doubt Holmes. King would have had other guys move up the rankings and be awarded title shots. Face first. Plodders who would stand right in front of him. Long since past their sell by date guys.

Or how about King--who can sell anything--getting a title defense against a guy like Lee Canalito? Undefeated. White guy. Big. Stallone connection. Easy fight for Gerry. One of those guys that wins a set up fight himself and all of a sudden he's highly ranked. That's the kind of fights we'd have had.

The other thing that happens is Victor Valle is out.

King was a master at matching his own signed guys. With Cooney's earning potential, you can bet your booths he'd match him vs one of his guys he was favored to beat.
