Until last Saturday, we had never seen a prime boxing champion step into an MMA ring and fight a prime MMA champion.

Boxing champ Holly Holm not only beat MMA champ Ronda Rousey in an MMA ring, she actually did it using hardly any MMA skills. It was basically a regular boxing match with the occasional hold which Holm would quickly escape from, only to get right back to the boxing. Basically, the boxer was able to make the MMA null and void. It was not about MMA; it was only about punching. (The final blow was a kick, but the fight was already over at that point because Rousey was out on her feet from the punches; Holm could have easily just knocked her down with a punch instead of the kick.)

Until we see another example of prime boxing champ vs prime MMA champ, we have to assume that boxing is the most effective combat discipline in the world. Remember: this was not in a boxing ring with boxing rules. If Holm had won in that manner, we would all be giving Rousey a pass. This was on Rousey's territory, where Rousey had all the advantages.

Watch the fight here on the Russian YouTube:

Yep, they've been holding on to the ridiculously shot Toney vs Coutoure fight but this time around a boxer still somewhat in her prime came in and destroyed the p4p #1 MMA fighter with ease. It speaks volumes of the skill in their "sport", can you imagine similar happening in boxing? Like some MMA guy beating Klitschko or Mayweather in a boxing match? Never in a million years, I'll tell you that much.

Not only Ronda got exposed that night but the entirety of MMA.

I don't see why anyone would think a MMA fighter would be better, anybody can grab and hold you boxing is about timing, punch placement, foot work, head movement etc.. all that UFC stuff is like backyard brawls mixed with real wrestling.

Or it could be Ronda just wasn't very good. I'd also note that it was a kick that actually KO'd her.

I'd agree that it's easier for boxers to make the transition though. You can't imagine an MMA fighter dominating a hyped boxing champ like that in a boxing match. The likes of Golovkin would take any of the UFC guys around their weight heads off.

Boxing is just another tool in the toolkit of an MMA fighter. Its never one or the other (boxing or MMA). Boxing is just one aspect of MMA. As is kickboxing, BJJ, and other forms of martial arts. The true art of MMA is to combine them together and use them effectively at different times, Holmes did this to a T. I disagree that an A-level boxer will always beat an A-level MMA fighter, an A-level boxer would need more than just boxing.

It has certainly burst the UFC hype bubble. I mean they were claiming she was the most dominant and greatest female athlete in history.

I don't think she will recover from this. She has that fragile mindset she hides with bravado and the chip on the shoulder antics.

I agree with you. I am a boxing fan, first and foremost and was glad that the "boxer" won this fight, but she still needed a bit of take down defence and a kick to win!

I think what skews these arguments is that the boxers who have taken part in MMA have been years past their prime, so their punching isn't as sharp, lessening any advantage they may have had.

A level boxers have more chance to win against A level mma fighters after enough time mma training. Just one fight didn't mean anything. Holly have turned to mma for 6 years and she had lots of troubles against Pennington who is a just so so mma fighter before the ronda fight. You can't say boxing is better than mma or mma is better than boxing, two different sports. But i do agree boxing has more talented athletes than mma because of longer history, greater influence and much more money. However mma is still growing, boxing seems to be a little bit stagnant... so in the future, who knows?

Didn't really prove anything other than an mma fighter would lose to a boxer in a boxing match, because as you say that's all it was. Ronda didn't really go for any takedowns, not because she couldn't, but because she's arrogant and wanted to beat holm at her own game, which was a ridiculous strategy.

Plus the fact that the shot that hurt rousey was actually an elbow and the finisher was a kick. Prime boxer vs prime mma fighter in a boxing match, boxer wins every time. In an mma match the mma fighter wins most of the time.

So Floyd Mayweather or Bernard Hopkins could go into MMA and dominate using JUST Boxing?

I swear some of you guys have never been in a fight before.

I think what it showed was she has a very limited number of takedowns. I'd expect more out of someone with her background. Holm was able to stop it and Ronda really had no answer.

Seems clear that she doesn't work on single or double legs, given the sport (MMA) and her athletic ability it is surprising.
