Updated with Roman Gonzalez rising to 3-0 with his big early blowout win over Sosa and Miguel Cotto making his first title defense against Geale and making him quit in the fourth round.

IMO lineal does mean... "something"... but it is reduced to level of any other major title. In other words, who and how it is earned, and how it is defended - and thus "who" holds it is what grants it relevance.

Taking Floyd as best known example... I don't think he has a good claim to 154. He beat Canelo at 152, and has not fought anywhere close to the weight since. This does not strike me as king as 154.

But at 147, he is obviously "the Man" and has been, and since PAC no arguments can even be made to the contrary. His 147lb lineal title is obviously very relevant, and possibly the strongest claim to mastery of a division period at the moment.

Just like Floyds WBA/WBC/WBO belts at 147 are worth more than Brooks IBF belt, based on who and how he has earned and/or defended them against - his 147 "lineal" title is also worth more than his own 154lb "title" based on same criteria.

That's my take anyhow. I don't consider Floyd 154lb lineal, but don't typically belabor the point because I think its basically vacant anyhow. (for examples sake, if say Andrade beat Lara, Canelo and Bundrage in order - I'd consider him "the man" at 154)
