Hi guys I have a question for anyone willing to throw in their two cents: My book is pretty massive and I still have some writing to do on it. Ive been thinking of possibly splitting it into two volumes, one being dedicated to his pre-championship (Im referring to his American LHW championship here) years, say pre-1922, and the other volume dealing with everything after. I dont really like the idea of splitting it up but its gotten so big, and I dont really want to cut much out, that I thought in an effort to save what I have it might be necessary. Its going to top out at around 700 pages (and Im not sure if includes the appendix and notes). Thoughts?
Everything about Greb is epic. I've read Gravitys Rainbow. 700 pages is no worries, if that's what he needs, that's what he deserves IMO.
It's very, very hard to say without reading and knowing your publishing situation to be honest. If you've written a "scholarly" tomb then you know how much you are going to sell and to who before you begin, so you are looking at one volume. You won't exclude that many people through price. If you've written something that is more readable, it's a shame to put people off with a 700-800 page book which will be very expensive. Two volumes really didn't hurt Last Train To Memphis...it can be done and that's been shown. If you have complete control and you're happy to put the work in, how about a one-volume hadrback and a dual-volume paperback? On the other hand, if you are looking at a situation where you have had enough or you might hit editorial/publishing snags based on a shitty performance for volume one OR you just want to "get it out there", one volume is the way to go.
Also, time to change your avatar again, that one is freaking me the **** out. How about this weird shaped thing? This content is protected
My sister works in publishing. I will ask her to list the pro's and con's of each approach in marketing terms.
A good, trusted Editor? MY two volumes of War & Peace are small books ,and they only run to 1443 pages including index. 700 pages sounds a lot, even for Greb.
I have dealt with some massive books recently and I think 700 pages is okay. I can say as a buyer, personally I will rather buy one volume and deal with it , than buy another volume. I think 700 pages is okayish.
Have it as large as it needs to be. For people that will want to buy they're obviously interested in Greb so they want to read the entire story in full. The more the better. There's nothing worse than reading something then thinking "why did the author leave so much out?"
My immediate thought is that it should be one volume similar in size to Adam's book on Jeffries. Every artist passionate about their art has to cut and trim to some degree ... I hope you have a good editor as you have such a vast accumulation of knowledge and are so close to the content it would be wise to have someone helping you cut and trim ... regardless I m sure it will be the definitive Greb book as well as a sport classic. You may at times be a tad hot headed but your knowledge is exceptional.
I rather like that photo he has in his home page here,.... He is in headgear and he's been working out hard by the looks of it........ His face in that photo screams out "FIGHTER !! WATCH OUT !!!",.... and a classic for the front cover of a book.
My favourite boxing books usually cram a lot of fights in there, and I prefer them written with a sense of passion,...... a good fight has it in buckets, it can be difficult with the some of the different expressions of the period, and the further back the harder it seems to be. I'd hate to try and write the Burke V Belcher fight from the newspaper report. Thankfully Klompton has a handle on this period's lingo. Of course it has to be truthful, but with Harry Greb there is his career record,,,,,,, without taking into account the ND bouts,...... His win loss record is really amazing, for 20 years I've searched for a film of a Greb fight in vain...... I know I'm not alone in this sentiment. I hope if a film ever surfaces, it shows Greb in his prime against a mouth watering name (hopefully another great who's films have been lost. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I just thought of this, but, is there any written evidence of Greb fights where words like "The, Crew, Set-up, Film Camera's" appear in sources.... I have noticed mention of Film crews and cameras in several newspaper reports of fights that I thought did not exist. Could somebody shine some light on the subject ??..... Klompton ??......... I don't know if there's any listed somewhere.
700 pages should be okay. I have a few books with around the 700 mark and they're all perfectly manageable. I'd sooner have it all in a single volume personally.
I'll take that The Walker/Greb fight (perhaps the most desirable) was filmed by Athletic Films 737 7th ave new york city. Can't recall the proprietors name but i have his obit and once spoke to his son, who knew nothing Chipman brothers Handled the distribution My source was The Film Daily a New York publication of the day.
