I saw a signature the other day in the general forum which was like "give me a 20-0 fighter and I show you half a dozen 12-8 fighters who would beat him". Which brought me about thinking a bit. So my question is, which fringe contender or worse (if any) at their time would beat the likes of: Frank Klaus Paul Berlenbach Marcel Cerdan Harold Johnson and why? Would it be about styles? If you have a good idea add a name to the list.
Good thread. Not sure about some of the guys to mention. But in terms of the thread title then think about Ralph 'Tiger' Jones, he really had the one moment, against Robinson, a massive percentage of his other fights against top guys went against him. I know Robinson wasn't in the heart of his prime, and maybe rusty, but he went on to amaze the boxing world after that. When you think about the records, well he wasn't a fringe contender but Fritzie Zivic has one of them records number wise, and beat top guys.
Randy Sandy beat Dick Tiger and Emile Griffith. He ended his career with a 24-24 win-loss record. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybW1QvR7YIU[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czvGs9aq9Ts"] [/ame]
Yeah i've read a bit about Zivic. A lot of his opponent's losses were due to them having Zivic's hands tied into their faces! Kidding, i just meant his record number wise really, like i said, he was more than a fringe contender for sure.
he lost (?!?!) his title to a fringe contender who wasn't in his league, under circumstance that stunk
