Such a classic fight and also the first real Mexican battle that I witnessed. I was only 10 years old when I watched it with my dad and I was pulling for Morales to win. But even back then I knew that Barrera had him that night and was lucky to walk away with the win. Still it was a fight that no one would ever forget. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZP5aiSQa4s
Barrera beat the enchiladas out of Morales, a massive robbery and anyone who says otherwise doesn't have a clue about the sport and should probably kill themselves.
One of the very best fights of that decade and a credit to both men as fighters and people. Two talented, proud and determined warriors in their primes put on a classic war and it was a privilege to have witnessed it. Powerpuncher is spot on that Barrera was the better man that night and deserved the nod but ironically that "loss" reinvigorated his career after his lustre was dimmed from being one of boxings young guns after the twin losses to Junior Jones. I'll be rewatching this one tonight.
I can't believe it was 15 years ago either. Dang. No way. I was at this fight live in the audience, and was not able to enjoy it as much as I would have liked, owing to the fact that I had a sizable bet on Morales, and it was a lot closer and tougher fight than I was expecting it to be. I felt more relief than joy when I won my bet. Having seen all three fights, I actually thought their third bout was the most brutal.
I remember having Morales a close winner. Maybe I should watch it again and consider if I should kill myself.
I remember catching this on a rerun about a week later and being spellbound. One of those were you instantly question whether you've seen a fight this good before. Has there ever been such a combination of skill, pace and a willingness to war?
