SIXTY STITCHES is no joke! Man, that's a lot of damage and a lot of blood lost.

Lewis is a BAD DUDE for being able to inflict that kind of damage. That is serious damage.

    Here is the problem.

If Lewis had beaten Wald, it would have been before the Brewster loss, and therefore of diminished significance.

While I feel that Wald is greater than Vitally in the light of history, I think that Vitally was the best potential win for Lewis to finish on, even if we didn’t know it at the time.

In that sense a bit like Louis defeating Walcott.

Are you saying that's a back hand punch?

There's so much about this fight that makes it one of the best heavyweight fights of all time.
Two incredibly talented big men, brawling it out for 6 rounds.

They were both staying toe to toe testing each others grit and durability.
Mind games and stamina went hand in hand.
There was an incredible punch output, with lots of brutal shots being landed.
You had Lewis taking jabs and straights flush, just to walk in a land a right of his own.
The clinch battles they had were just as important to the fight as anything else.
    It was so competitive.

And that huge cut on Vitalis eye, and the cutmen trying to stop it. And you had Lewis targeting it.
And of course the stoppage was all the more dramatic, when Vitali showed his bravery by walking around the ring demanding to fight on, arguing with Lewis and celebrating.

It was also Lewis' last stand before the passing of the torch. It was a big generational fight.
The bout has a lot of importance in terms of legacy. Great fight for the ages.

With hindsight as our friend it's extremely impressive Lewis could put paid to a heir apparent at such an advanced age and career stage. He was declining and it showed, but he showed great heart and determination to lay it all on the line and mix it up with the younger man.

One of the most controversial things for me surrounding this fight and the cut that i never see anyone talk about is that Vitali's munchkin cutman Joe Souza ripped his cut open and made it almost twice as bad by placing the towel on his cut then roughly and aggressively wiping downwards, ripping a giant flap of skin off above his eye.

7:08 look at the cut at this time stamp and notice the bottom part of skin under the cut

7:09 two downward wiping motions with the towel

7:11-7:12 when he does the last wipe you can see the gaping wound is almost twice as big and now the open wound part extends much further down closer to the top of his eyelid right above the top of his eyeball. That idiot Joe Souza wasn't Vitali's cutman the next year in 2004 versus Sanders it was Al Gavin.

Lewis hit Holyfield with plenty of his uppercuts and Holyfield didn't even change expression.

    Great post!

What a way to "pass the torch" though, and not be one of those guys that gets embarrassed.

Lewis showed serious heart in there. He made the right choice to retire after, as a rematch would have shaved years off his life (although we know how good he was at winning them and he'd no doubt be in serious condition for it).

So how come it never did? Did you never see Lewis hit a guy with an uppercut before?
