Many TV boxing analysts tell the audience its not wise to keep your guard low. In many cases they are correct. A high guard with a tucked in chin most certainly makes it harder for your opponent to land head shots. Having said that, in my opinion there are a few advantages to keeping your guard low. They are: 1 ) Balance! It is easier for many fighters to move swiftly with their hands closer to their waist level than in front of their face. 2 ) Going to the body. 3 ) Landing the counter hook. 4 ) Protecting against body shots. 5 ) Baiting the other fighter. 6 ) Creating a clinch. 7 ) Conserving energy. While keeping your guard low is not ideal, it can work well with fast handed and fleet footed boxers who have solid head movement. It can also work well with very tall boxers who understand how to fight tall and use their longer reach. Agree? Disagree?
Using a low guard against a fighter who has equal or faster hands can get you in trouble. As you move up and continue fighting better fighters it may prove extremely detrimental to have became accustomed to using it. I try to keep from doing it myself too much.
Watch Jose Napoles. Hands low and he never reacts to a punch because, in general, he is in a spot where he cannot be hit. If you stay out of range and move in through openings you create by slipping a punch, then you can keep your hands low. You are hitting and not getting hit. Blocking punches, a 'high guard', is what you do when you don't know how to fight, when you are just starting out and learning. When you know, you get your hands out of the freaking way so you can punch with them. Getting punched on your hands is foolish and wasteful.
Obviously You have to have a certain level of experience to do this though. As my old coach used to say - "you have to learn the rules before you can break them" Pick your opponent wisely too - hands down is not advisable against Manny Pacquiao
thats all very well but we are amateur boxers who dont know anything about the opponents we are facing so u cant really choose your opponent wisely. if your sparring against a strong puncher, be sure to stay away from him when your not ready to attack or learn to stifle his strengths, dont put hands up against them strong punchers and keep him coming or you will get hurt. holding your gloves up all the time does fatigue your shoulders after a while well it did for me lol
