Take any fighter from boxing history, make him weigh in at less than 170 pounds and place him in the ring across from Corbett on Saint Patrick's day of 1897.

Who, if any, can beat this Corbett? Was Corbett a skinny parlor magician who conned an uninformed era? Or was Fitzsimmons truly an exceptional talent?

I think that you would struggle to find one to be honest.

The people who beat Corbett did it by stopping him, generally while behind on the cards.

He ate smaller fighters, because he could match them in the attributes where they needed to be better as the smaller man, i.e. speed and technique.

You would basically be looking for another Bob Fitzsimmons!

You might be able to find a shed load of light heavies who could do it.

I was thinking Roy Jones Jr, but Corbett had freakish speed (even if not as much as Jones), and had really good toughness, he would easilly have the power to trouble Roy too.

Worth remembering that years later Corbett destroyed Kid McCoy., who was another one of the best middeweights and L.Heavyweights of that era

I don't know that I would put too much credence in that win ,both Corbett and McCoy's wives said it was a choreographed fix.

It would be a rash man who put money on it.

I think that you can definitely argue it either way.

    Why trust them?

I don't think so. He was just too raw and would be getting picked off.

Monzon is a great middle ,I just think he wasn't the quickest of them and might struggle with Corbett's speed.
    Moore has a shot .

Why trust Corbett who was in a barney with Sharkey ,or McCoy who was in several fixed fights?
Well he knocked out Jack O Brien twice, sometimes power overcomes precision.
