A middleweight to defeat James J. Corbett

Because I don't think it sounds fake in the reports of it when it happened. Sounds like McCoy was hurt fairly bad

I think O'Brien was much easier to KO than Corbett, that he was only a middleweight probably contributed, and ancient Fitzsimmons was able to catch him.

 

As far as I'm concerned the jury is still out on this fight. O Brien went the distance twice with Burns who was a pretty decent puncher.

 

Eugene Hart has the raw power to stop him if he were to connect with a peach of a shot.

Lausse is another fighter who I feel could mingle with the small great heavyweights of yesteryear with mixed results.

Les Darcy was a middleweight great who also had success at LHW. He likely would have fought even larger fighters if he were to of lived and to of continued fighting...

 

I have put up a post, which I think is a fair summary of the evidence.

We would always take rumors before the fight took place, and two witnesses corroborating each other, as tangible evidence of a fix.

Even so, I think that there are enough problems with the witness testimony, to er on the side of rejecting it!

 

I've said my bit on it.

 

I think it is worth debating, even if it would not lead us to a definite conclusion!

 

It would be a rash man who didn't put his entire paycheck on it.

Would you care to explain why I should put my entire pay check on it, in terms that a person confronted with that decision, might find logical?

Just actually justify why you think he'd beat Corbett.

 

You would probably be justified in picking a cruiserweight sized fighter who was a renowned finisher over Corbett, because you would have history on your side.

When the finisher in question is a middleweight, you have to doubt their ability to either stop him, or outpoint him.

Also while his power was nothing special for a heavyweight, it seems to have been pretty compelling against middleweight sized fighters.

 

Essentially the sam size with greater reach, betters skills, sufficient power and a willingness to deliver it. Corbett's fear of black fighters.

I don't think that it is fair to accuse Corbett of being afraid of black fighters, when he fought Peter Jackson, who was the most avoided heavyweight of the era!
