I believe a new boxing publication should be started..with a higher quality of boxing scholarship involved than what's involved in the present incarnation of Ring magazine. All sports are represented by a magazine, even in this paperless, internet age, and boxing is being poorly represented by a self-serving, obviously partisan, juvenile type rag like "golden-boy" ring magazine. The lower case "r" in ring was intentional. It dosen't deserve to be taken as seriously as previous versions of that magazine, certainly not like the one that Nat Fliescher once pioneered. Any thoughts or opinions?
K O , Ring's sister publication folded , I used to enjoy the hypothetical matchups in that. Boxing is a minority sport now .Boxing Illustrated has gone there is no demand for another, and if the Ring does not improve, I will stop buying that.
Kinda agree in a way. The Ring is still the best of a bad bunch but I feel it could be better. A hof magazine series would be good.. Each month focuses on 1 guy from the hof going right from pioneer to modern... That would last about 50 years easily. Could be interesting. But that wouldn't rival nor overtake the ring. As far as all encompassing goes, nothing else comes close. Plus the ring has the benefit of being seen as the bible of boxing. It needs a good rival first or a drop in subscription second. Anything else and there's no motivation for it to improve.
This kind of reminds me of those Our Gang comedies, where they decide "let's start our own newspaper" and then Spanky or Alfalfa comes out wearing the little fedora with the "Press" tag stuck in the hat band. Those were good times.........
I got a Boxing News one day and that magazine is great......really nice to read... Unfortunately there is nothing here about Boxing, no Magazines, newspapers, zero....I get news and articles on internet only.... Like Red said....a magazine about Classic Boxing would be awesome !!
i think transcripts of mcvey and mendoza's brawls would be more entertaining and informative than anything the ring put outs i've defended it for years. i've bought every issues for years. i said it wouldn't change under oscar it has. i don't think they're biased now, it's just a **** magazine. poor writing, boring articles, no boxing analysis.
I kind of threw the idea out in this forum because I personally don't know of any other source where you'll find a better collection of like minded enthusiasts..of boxing heads..
I think most boxing magazines have got progressively worse, mainly because of the writers. The magazine i enjoy reading most is Boxing Monthly issues from the 90s. Even the print quality seems to have gone backwards from then on.
The quality of writing in the magazines from the 70's was just putrid. Go pick up a copy of World Boxing or Boxing Illustrated from those times and you'd swear a 12-year old wrote the articles, just awful. I don't keep up with modern boxing and so can't say what it's like now, but the writing from the 80's and into the 90's was generally pretty good.
Print is a fading industry though. Most new magazines fold pretty fast. Oprah has had success with her magazine, but she's Oprah. I could be wrong (and I'm sure all the rabid Oprah fans on here will correct me), but even her rag is a losing investment. While I agree that a new and better alternative to The Ring is a good idea, it's a pretty small niche these days. It's more likely to get started over in England where they have more local support. In America, forget it. Magazines are going the way of the dodo, and a new magazine on a niche sport is not going to do well enough to survive. Unless of course we combine it with MMA and Wrestling! I'm sure you'd love that, red cobra. Don't worry though, we'll be sure to give Jimmy Young a mention in every issue!
So what you're saying is, we need to get Oprah to head up our boxing magazine....... I like where you're going with this, please continue.
