The statement "beat the hell out of women", is, over the top imo,and that is my point. By all means have a" warts and all" film ,otherwise leave it alone. Johnson appears to have been a contradictory cuss, generous one minute ,mean spirited the next, disloyal to managers, yet he paid for Sam Mcvey's funeral. The man was not perfect ,far from it but a fascinating character imo.
There's only one main concept that needs to be built upon. The point in which Jack just wants to be a regular person in society, but every eye watching him sees something else.
Nice post McGrain. This potential film could easily be a non-boring, entertaining well done three hour docu-drama that could have and should have been completed properly in the Michael Mann "Ali" project. The single most important characteristic of a film of this magnitude would be the historical research. Mann's Ali was very poorly researched overall, and the only way a full length feature film can do justice to the legacy of Jack Johnson is making sure that crucial historical, moments of truth within his life are at least accurately attempted in the film. Considerable screen time as secondary characters with significant lines should be given to Sam McVea, Sam Langford, Joe Jeanette and Joe Walcott. Jack Johnson's early boxing career should be included, as thorougly as possible even though time will have to be considered. Characters for Sullivan, Corbett, Ketchel, Tommy Burns, Jack Blackburn and Dempsey should be considered as well. I don't think the movie should necessarily end with the loss to Willard, like the production that starred James Earl Jones, but rather have Johnson's life continued, especially up to the time he started calling out Dempsey. Intertwining his personal life, especially the social aspect of his marriages would definitely be of great significance, as well as his love for playing the upright bass and his affinity for race cars which sadly led to his death. This movie better have at least a 14 A rating, better yet, make it a R rating to be real as possible. I'm sure there are survivors of the lynchings that occured and the near race war that happened when Jack Johnson won the heavyweight title. Many blacks were killed immediately following his victory. It would be hard for me to watch that part of the movie, but it's something that can't be avoided. It's a real and crucial part of American history that shouldn't be swept under the rug.
:good :good How about making a movie about how once Johnson became champ he didn't fight Mcvey, Langford, Jeanette etc other legit black fighters. He drew the color line against his own people the same way every cries that it happened to him. Johnson being used as a symbol for this is absurd. Like alot of people who end up becoming "symbols" for a cause or event, Johnson was not what people claim. How about you stop perpetuating nonsense. Do everyone a favour and make one on Langford.
An interesting idea. I would submit that the social and political events surounding Johnsons career still make it an obvious subject for a film.
"How about you stop perpetuating nonsense. Do everyone a favour and " make one on Langford." Now we're talking, lets do one on Langford.
