    :deal This.

Il reserve further jusgement until i sit down tonight and watch the fight in full.

But iv seen Alvarez twice (vs Cotto and Baldomir) and he looks heavy handed and exciting.
BUT...hes beat Cotto and Hattons inferior younger brothers that is all...and he had moments of labouring in both those fights.

Maybe its this vunarability what will make him ultra exciting as he comes up. But lets be plain and straight about this...Matthew Hatton is not even the 4th best Welterweight in England. Like i say il have to watch the fight later but i fully would expect Alvarez should have stopped him

just finished the first 2 rounds...

alvarez is not setting his punching up at all. he's got crisp, powerful punches but he needs hatton to stand and cover up (which he seems to be obliging) before he unleashes them and actually lands anything

If he wants to be a super star, he has to improve a lot. He has bad footwork, is bad at cutting off the ring, no head movement. He has to improve a lot if he wants to be the next big thing. Thankfully, he's only twenty so he'll have time to improve.

For sure. I think his power is a little oversold by some. He's not as accurate, sharp, or devastating a puncher as he is billed. Basically I don't see Alvarez as really excelling in anything, just being solid overall.

My boy ponce de leon got robbed and i'm pissed.

That's all well and good, but what did you think of his ruggedly handsome Quarry-esque visage?.

they introduced matt hatton as no.5 in the world ??....how?...at welter or light-middle ??

anyway...in response to the quote above, and what burt opened with..and this is off topic...there was a cracking british title fight last night..gary sykes v carl johansonn...and i couldnt help, although he's a super-feather, being reminded of floyd patterson when i looked at sykes...he stance and the way he would leap in with sweeping left hooks..
go to around 5.20 here for that to make any sense....maybe just me being silly thinking it...

Burt is right in recognizing a potential new star. Let's not forget that there have been plenty of stars who were not world-beaters out of the gate and never became anything more than glorified club-fighters. New England has Paz and Ward to begin with -and Paz may be on track to have a movie made out of his life next.

Alvarez has plenty going for him. He's young. He's built like a truck. He's got a gimmick -a freckle-faced, red-headed Mexicano is a rarity that you don't forget. He ain't ugly; and he's already got almost as many bouts as Floyd at 20. He has some technical skill.

Yeah, he's got star potential and there just isn't any doubt about it.

He's got much to work on though. I was more disappointed than impressed with what I saw last night. First of all, he looked like he could roll over Hatton at any time, but didn't. He allowed Hatton to survive and the reason wasn't a damn thing Hatton was doing, it was his own conditioning. Alvarez fought like a young man who didn't do his roadwork. It's never good when you insist on a catch weight and then fail to make it and have to give up thousands in a penalty against yourself. It also tells me that they're having trouble controlling him already.

You could see it in how he fought. He fought in spots. He was waiting to throw that hard left hook counter and when Hatton was knocked back what did he do --he rested. He didn't jump on him, he took his time and caught his breath.

Here he is, on an HBO main event, and he's waltzing with a fighter who should not have had a chance. Alvarez showed signs of thinking that he's already arrived. He hasn't. And he left his conditioning at the depot.

This is how I see it. For every fighter 5 fighters who has the makings of a star, only one or two emerge.

    star yes

    superstar no

so in order too become one there is only one possible way.

beat Angulo, Kirkland, Lara. at least 2 of them.

A very sub-par performance. he definitely has talent, but maybe in his head he is thinking that he is already a star...not a good sign. but he is only twenty...

S, I agree with you. I was shocked to find that Ponce De Leon, lost a unanimous decision.Utterly shocked. Ponce De Leon seemed to have found the Fountain of Youth, outpunching his posturing opponent a big majority of rounds only to
lose by a MAJORITY decision...Robbery before our eyes. PHEW !!!:patsch:patsch:patsch

Agree. He's not fighting tentatively or really even what you call patiently; he just looks lackadaisical and doesn't seem to have any sharpness. Kind of like watching Donaire against some random pinoy cans after the darchinyan fight.
