I find it hard to blame Hopkins simply because the only world title fight he had with a catchweight was to his opponent's benefit. The Wright and Pavlik fights were non-title bouts. I don't really get enraged about catchweights, but I do feel like one can justifiably criticize them when they are used for vacant title belts. I also feel that anyone demanding a catchweight as a challenger (as in the case of Pacquiao with Cotto, and Williams with Martinez) can be justifiably criticized. Yes, they may make impossible fights possible, but it should also be recognized that they can be tools used by stars to gain an advantage before a fight.
you bitches are idiots, blame suleiman for putting the title on the line, originally it was just supposed to be a normal match up between matt hatton and alvarez, hatton is a welterweight and they offered him a fight at a catchweight of 150. only a couple of weeks ago suleiman decided to put the title on the line so the beaner wins it.
As long as the best fight the best I have no problem with catchweights though they are getting very repetitive. Catchweights have been around way before our times and will stay so we have to accept that. If a fighter signs a catchweight fight and knows they won't be even half of 100% at the weight yet they sign for the fight who's fault is that? I have a problem with catchweight title fights and admit that boxing REALLY doesn't need to have more divisions as it has too much already not to mention too much belts.
I just don't understand the problem with making 147 or if you can't, 154. You shouldn't have to make 150 because your opponent is a pleb.
saul alvarez cant make 147, matthew hattons is a 147lb fighter, they decided to meet in the middle, no title was involved till a couple of weeks ago.
or the Junior Manny division, since Pac was the first to win a "JMW title" at 150lbs, and been draining fighters.
maybe but as has been said, it's been going on for years and in almost all divisions jimmy wilde did it at the turn of the century
Exactly. Make sure you let FORMI know that, since he's been sounding like a bitter Canelo ex-girlfriend lately. But like i've been saying, any title fight fought at a catchweight is bull****. Leonards 168/175lb title fight, Manny-Margo 150lb, and this fight included.
i'm on the fence but i see your point: titles are in weight classes. to win those titles, fighters should be within those weight classes. this is just as valid as pac-margo...except pac was at least a proven great fighter fighting a larger, quality opponent. alvarez is a prospect fighting someone is nowhere near ranked. i'm certainly not sold that either should be for a major title, let alone at a catch weight
The fact it's a title fight is irrelevant as far as I'm concerned. 10 and 12 round fights should be a catchweight-free zone.
Boxing needs more weightclasses, more belts, more champions. 10 Belts > 5 Belts Manny Pac > SRR you see...?
