a prime pernell whittaker vs manny pacquiao, who would win???

My next guess after failing with left/ right hand thing was to suggest kickboxing....

 

Why is this even being discussed? Pacquiao is my favourite current fighter, but seriously Pernell is the greatest fighter since Leonard.

Plus I think he's possibly the worst match up for Pac I can think of. He'd be in with a fighter who has faster hands, moves a thousand times better around the ring, and has an iron chin.

Seriously think it would be a near shut out, with one or two rounds for Pac due to his work rate.

 

TBH I think once we'd had the Mayweather vs. Leonard thread on here then any potential match up became fair game...

 

I'm waiting for Tyson-Butterbean and Langford-Ryan Rhodes.

 

Gotta Give Rhodes a chance with those "modern training techniques".

A stoppage of Pacquiao i could see, as Pete was a brillient body puncher especially at his prime (actually hurt the bigger Trinidad to the body when he was well past it). However Pernell stopping mayweather jr. is a bit of a stretch. That fight would be the ultimate chess match, with a lot of posturing and taking it in turns to counter punch and swap rounds. I don't think there would be enough power punches or sustained exchanges for either man to get a stoppage. Both good defences and would cancel eachother out. As sure of a distance fight as you can get.

 

Nah, Pea would batter him, his consistent jab makes it a near whitewash on the cards from the off, his dynamic offensive skills would see him rough Floyd up at any range he wants, Peas defence sees Floyd get frustrated and increasingly damaged, and Unce Rog' pulls him out late, not believing he sat him on his arse twenty years ago :good

A whitewash on the cards AND a stoppage? Goodness me Flea, either you're overrating Whitaker or shitting on Floyd...I suspect it's the latter, LOL!

I'd pick Whitaker to win a decision myself, but he'd have a tough night with Mayweather. You're forgetting just how small and physically "weak" Sweet Pete was...if it wasn't for his incredible ability to make you miss and make you pay, his boxing IQ and his heart then he would've got lost against the beasts he was fighting. No way is Sweet Pea "battering" Floyd. You're missing the style match-up my man.

Pernell would have to work hard to win the ring generalship battle in order to come out with the victory. He would have to force Floyd on the front foot and i think he would. Pea could get slightly drawn out of his plan against the right style though. Floyd's longer reach would give him problems, plus Mayweather has in his arsenal Pernell's weakness (if we can call it that) and that's a precise right lead. What generally happens when two fighters with a similar skillset and mentality match-up is they become more of what they are. They start to mirror eachother and it lends to close fights with little details making the difference (check Toney vs McCallum 1 as an example). The difference in this fight is who fights through his second wind the better. I think Pernell's superior slickness and southpaw stance gives him the decision, but no one's getting "whitewashed" here bro.
