Luis Lebrón vs. Ricardo Adolfo Núñez Pérez, 8 rounds @ featherweight

 

Round 1

Lebrón is ducking forward and swooping in on Núñez with low-slung gourds on the body, and Núñez is countering with straight combos into the brow, chopping rights on the coiffure, and quick slashing body shots at short range. Núñez is proving more effective at every distance, but the naturally bigger and heavier-handed Lebrón catches him with an uppercut and buzzes him. Núñez recovers and resumes circling in and out, and continues to both outbox and outslug Lebrón.

Round 2

Lebrón is bringing the heat, making the older man trade with him up close. Núñez makes him miss the right hand by ducking in but Lebrón is now chucking a left hook directly on the heels of the right, and surprises Núñez with it, snapping his neck backward. Lebrón is using the lead right like a jab, drilling his way in with it and then unloading combinations. Núñez is forced to load up on big right uppercuts on the backfoot, not doing anything to slow down Lebrón, who rushes in and bashes Núñez with heavy left hooks into his sides, moving him physically across the canvas involuntarily by a good yard or two despite being partially blocked.

Round 3

Núñez is bravely standing in the pocket and prodding with the jab, attempting to beat Lebrón to the punch and take away the play. Núñez is raising his arms like a shield, the bottoms of them glued to his face, pinned together with their backs facing outward to intercept anything Lebrón throws at his façade and then using footwork and head movement to elude when Lebrón hooks. Núñez having a real moment here, growing in confidence, tossing high right hands that back Lebrón up. Sneaky right uppercuts on the nose splitting the guard set up a check left hook pivoting out of the pocket by El Matematico.

Round 4

Lebrón is shooting the right hand out from by his temple, stretching it as far as it'll go, extending it toward Núñez's face, but walking into light door-knocker left jabs. Núñez is shelling up and getting batted around like a ball of string at the mercy of a cat, but at least isn't getting hit flush with anything from Lebrón. Very nice body work and mid-range combos by Núñez, although he swaps hooks with Lebrón and gets shaken to his core with under ten seconds left.

Round 5

Núñez is waiting for Lebrón to get close and then squatting below his typical right hand altitude, then hooking the body while he's down there, slashing just below Lebrón's guard. Nice accurate stuff from Núñez, turning Lebrón in the pocket and playing the matador at point-blank with ole` sways backward to dodge and taking quick lateral steps between shots. Lebrón is ripping huge corkscrew body shots but not getting Núñez very cleanly, just grazing him on the side of the waistband. Núñez able to slip most of Lebrón's shots when the boricua goes headhunting, but the few that land - even in part - visibly hurt. Lebrón is muscling his way in, throwing one body shot per Núñez combo, and then just grinding his left forearm into Núñez's diaphragm while holding onto him and ragdolling with his right arm, perhaps bent on sapping his wind.

Felt like he physically couldn't take anymore I guess. I hope this is his last assignment in the ring, then. He was always fragile and is now ancient for a hard-used featherweight at 32. On an 0-6 losing slump dating to summer of 2017.

Patrick Gabriel Cora Rivera vs. Gerónimo Nahuel Sacco, 8 rounds @ light middleweight

 

Someone's zero has got to go!

Cora is 9-0 (6); Sacco is 8-0 (1).

 

Round 1

Cora is moving in on Sacco, planting a nice stiff right jab. Sacco having trouble getting his bearings with the southpaw, unable to get past that jab - and GETS JTFD MIDWAY INTO THE ROUND. Up quickly, unhurt, but got put on the seat of his trunks hard. By a jab. Cora is now shifting, pressuring Sacco from the orthodox stance, then back to southpaw. Cora is doubling the right jab into Sacco's face and spearing him with lefts as Sacco ducks away, leaving himself draped over as though on a laundry-line, pawing up with feeble left jabs.

Round 2

Cora squeezes both gloves around Sacco's ears as the Argentinian comes diving in and paddling Cora's middle. The ref separates them and Cora regains control, keeping Sacco at the outer reach of his right jab. Cora is walking Sacco down, bunching his elbows together when Sacco dives in going for the body, leaving his fists a few inches apart, forming a V. Sacco, interestingly, has turned southpaw himself now. Sacco tries harpooning Cora with lefts downstairs, but Cora is just lowering his elbows to catch them and ripping Sacco with a hard 1-2 across the face. Sacco now has a cut on his right eye, from punches as I never saw a headbutt. Cora whips a right hook that nearly has Sacco down by the ropes, but he's able to buoy himself and stay upright. Sacco now rises up on his toes and slams his own right hook up at the head, but Cora blocks with his left arm raised up vertically. Cora ducks a big looping right from Sacco and nips him with a left uppercut into his face as he's bowing in at the bell.
