Round 1

Torres is circling to his left, keeping a tight guard and then driving in with a pair of rapid underhanded body shots. Portillo chases him out with a series of straight flurries and long reach-around hooks on the body, having to lunge past the low-slung elbows of Torres. Very compact guard by Torres, bobbing and weaving, seeking an opening to counter with a bomb. Portillo catches him with a lashing right hand and left hook! Torres buzzed, and swerving to either side behind his rigid guard. Portillo swoops in for the kill, but Torres is able to weave to either side and evade further punishment. Torres plugs away, finding spots to land his own power shots now coming forward. Portillo hurt. Torres pins him on the ropes, feints a couple of heavy uppercuts feigned center-line at the chest and instead dips to his left and plants a HUGE LEFT HOOK INTO THE BODY. Portillo down and squirming in agony, clutching his side!

KO1!!

 

Goddamn. What a round. I was about to eat my words and say "well, sorry guys, I guess maybe Torres was yet another piece of can-crushing pyrite, not a genuine prospect " ...but, after one shaky moment, faith restored. That was savage!

Props to Portillo, he was game and came to win, giving it his best shot early on, but that gut-buster he took, oof. He'll be crapping blood until 2020.

35 seconds over par, if comparing with Eduard Troyanovksy (who also defeated Portillo via KO1) but Torres' was far more brutal.

 

Torres might be the most optimistic I've felt about the upwardly mobile chances of a boxer from Puerto Rico since ...well, hell, maybe Junito himself.

While he's no cutie and is certainly far less schooled than someone like Verdejo, and not carrying in those amateur credentials (in fact I have no idea wtf his amateur experience was, if any) - this is the pro game. Verdejo is lacking in a lot of intangibles, and doesn't have that raw bone-crunching equalizer that Lobo seems to have in both fists.

He's just a smasher. World class boxer-punchers with a chin will eat him alive, but he could definitely annihilate plenty of contenders to separate the chaff and maybe grab himself a belt.
