I don't need to do a search to have an idea of what was common/generally accepted or not. Go lecture somebody who actually doesn't have a clue of what he's talking about. Neither 133 pounds or ringside weigh-in were obligatory for a long time by this point for the bout to be considered for the lightweight championship by the majority of writers/experts. A lot of this discussion was going on in the 1890s, by the time Gans became the champion people insisting on 133 ringside were in the minority by far.
many alts what's your problem with Gans? I would think Gans would be in everybody's five ATG and Nelson is not. Nelson or his people who insisted that Gans weigh in three times the day of, were wrong, once at ringside would have been adequate. Was it cos he was black that they pulled that on him? To think a great intellectual pysstorian as yourself should know that Nelson and his people were unfairly treating Gans. You make it out like, good for Nelson that made sure Gans made weight. Maybe cos it wasn't in an article, you wouldn't know but ringside weigh in was enough. For a guy who has thousands of articles and read them all you still DKSAB. FYI Gans was a HOF/ATG, that was taken advantage of, so Nelson shouldn't be lauded for being astute for "making sure" Gans weighed 133, 3 times the day of, when once at ringside would have guaranteed Gans made weight, Nelson and his people were blatantly trying to weaken Gans. Gans made weight and he did it at ringside. If they made Gans weigh in with gloves, trunks and and shoes, that would have made it really unfair, cos all that stuff adds weight a pound and a half more or less. WHY CANT YOU SEE THAT?
