PPV sales- are they global or just USA, when they say for example, that DLH - May does 2.35 or whatever- is that just the USA ? because I think PPV records are accumulated to consider only america and its distribution thru HBO, as they sell off international rights up front to other countries providers such as sky, sports asia, whatever, etc- who then attach their own commentators and graphics- but use the same feed , and its then up to their networks to tally their own sales- and hbo dosent get a revenue of that- only off of the initial sale for the rights. I say this because i suspect its only usa- because arum talks of accumulating west coast, east coast numbers- not asia numbers etc. if this is the case- then i think ppv numbers are a poor way to gauge fan interest or promotional success. if that were the case- of course a pac - hatton or pac-clottey fight would never do as well as a mayweather fight- seein as there is no american star. but internationally - its combined viewership might very well be much higher. anyone care to shed some light on this for me?
The PPV numbers you get from HBO, Top Rank, ESPN or whoever reports them do not include the international PPV buys. America only. So De La Hoya Mayweather did 2.35 in the USA buys. Who knows how many international.
There really isn't much of an international PPV market, the fights are usually on free TV overseas except for Canada and maybe Australia which are tiny markets compared to the US. US numbers do include Puerto Rico which is a US territory.
Yep. This is true. In the UK we had Cotto V Manny and Mayweather V Marquez on Sky Sports 1. Which is a Sports channel you can get from Cable, but I did have to pay £15 ( about $25 I think ) to watch Hatton get knocked out in 2 rounds, so I think it works out nicely. Oh yeah, we had Clottey V Manny for free too, basically all major fights that do not involve any UK fighter, we get to watch for free because theres no sense in trying to get people to pay for somebody that many casual fans might not of heard of.
well yeah- here in australia we pay for all boxing- its all ppv here- no freebies. and all the pubs show the fights- and it costs more for a pub to buy it than a household. so i imagine- though it being a small market- still being significant- like adding on a new york or california, when you add Australias market, good for 50 000 or so, at least.
When HBO reports the PPVs they are just domestic, outside of the US fights are sold a bit differently, from what I can understand the promoters sell the fights to channels (so for example, In a recent fight Don King sold his fight to over 200 countries. What that means is that broadcasting companies operating in those 199 countries(US excluded) purchased the fight.)
