I could just pm Al with this but i thought it was a good little story some people here may want to read. I'm in the gym earlier today, i go to the one in the Adelphi these days Al. I'm speaking to this older guy in the changing rooms, about in his 50s i'd say. I always talk to the older guys about football and stuff in there. I ask him if he's a red or a blue, he tells me he's more into boxing, he used to be a fighter. I ask him his name, he starts laughing and won't tell me. We start talking about boxing, i ask him his name again, he won't tell me, he then tells me he's from Birkenhead, his accent sounds proper scouse though, he said he's lived in Liverpool for a long time, his kids are from here. He then says he was the only guy from Birkenhead who ever boxed in the olympics, so if i look him up i'll know his name. I told him i'd be in with his name tomorrow then! I might have this part mixed up, but when i told him i used to box for the golden gloves he said him and a guy who's name escapes me who was from the gloves both won bronze medals in a commonwealth games once, this man died not long ago, a black guy is all that i remember he said about him. Anyway, Al Francis, i could probably look this up, but i'd rather ask you, who the hell was the only Birkenheader to fight in the olympic games? Thanks mate.
Oh, sorry just saw your replies now, so i got 2 guys here. Well he's got a bald head and a grey mustache?
Yeah, i was just describing his appearance cos GazOC put a different name forward, but i think you sound pretty confident, thanks mate. Can't wait to get in there and tell him, he looks a tough guy still as well!
Nah, Contehs right. I was just throwing in a good Birkenhead fighter from roughly (too roughly TBH) that era on the off chance.
Oh yeah, if that's him (and he's not pretending to be Robbie Davies) he still looks a hard *******. He was a massive hitter in his pomp and a general hard knock out of the ring too. He had a couple of legendary ding-dongs with Terry O'Neill (The Aintree Iron) by all accounts. My brother's old best mate hangs about with him now (or did a couple of years ago). Well, hangs 'on to him' would be a better description.
That's that then, crazy i never thought when i got up today i'd be asking the forum this. Made my day though kind of.
You were talking to Robbie Davis (big red). He boxed in the 76 Olympics. The fella he was talking about was Carl Speare who I remember fighting one of my dads fighters Joe Lally. Didnt know he had died. I remember him as a young man, always dead smart in those 70's clothes. Pretty sure Robbie fought Joe in the Aba's.
**** me, everyone spoilt my moment of glory. Started my response , got a knock at the door ,come back and finished and everyone beat me to it. I was gonna say bet Conteh knows it.
You know what that was the name of the guy who passed away definitely. The surname came back to me before while i was out. Thanks mate, can't wait to tell him his name! Haha
Yep, never achieved much. He lost to Pat Thomas, who's probably most well-known for losing to Herol Graham. But Davies was highly touted as a pro, due to his blasting style. I think it surprised many that he didn't achieve more. Does his conk still cover nearly all of his face? :hey
