We've now all heard both Hopkins and Calzaghe bigging-up their respective resumes as well as dissing the standard of opposition faced by each other. Calzaghe has accused Hopkins of making a name for himself by beating up 'little' guys and winning against a poorly conditioned Tarver whose only claim to fame is beating a gun-shy, shot, poorly conditioned Roy Jones. Hopkins has shown equal scorn for the quality of Calzaghe´s resume, labelling Joe a conman and fighting a bunch of unknown eurobums. So the question is, how to judge the respective levels of competition both Joe and Hopkins have faced. Well, look at each boxer's resume in turn and select fighters who they have each fought and would have a good chance beating the other fighter. Prime for prime, name names and give your reasons :bbb
Come on, the weight is definitely an issue. It's like taking the NFL's best wide-receiver and asking him to play line-backer or something. Yes, he'll do a job for you but he won't be anywhere near as effective as he would be in his natural position.
They have simlar records, maybe hop edges it for now, but if Joe wins saturday it could sway it his way. Hops record is full of famous people but DLH and Winky particulaly should have been fighting at middle/lightheavy anyway. they look good on paper but in reality they are tarnished. Head to head Kessler is a bigger win than both Winky and DLH. Slagging off records is easy though and is done all too often and doesnt prove anything either! hopkins is no doubt a great fighter and will easily get into the HOF, I feel the same about Joe Calzaghe.
Prime v Prime Hopkins previous opponents who would stand a good chance against Calzaghe: RJJ Calzaghe's previous opponents who would stand a good chance against Hopkins: Kessler Reid Eubank
Prime v Prime, I doubt that Reid would have a chance against Hopkins. Reid was an excellent counter puncher who thrived on Calzaghe's swarming attack but Hopkins would have fought more conservatively and easily beaten him in a boring fight. I agree with your other choices.
I agree with this, BUT even fighting Jones (win or loss) will greatly improve Calzaghe's resume. Fact is, Calzaghe has never faced anyone close to a Roy Jones, or even a Glen Johnson or Tarver. Neither had Lacy or Kessler.
