Question. Why do Floyd Mayweather Junior and David Haye loom large over boxing even though one is retired and the other hasn't even fought at his new weight yet? The fallout from Cotto/Margarito has mostly centred around Floyd. Floyd ducked Margarito or Margarito would get thrashed by Mayweather etc. Heavyweight boxing threads cannot be discussed without David Haye's name popping up prominently in every thread. He's never fought there (except the Bonin fight). Former unified CW champ O'Neil Bell has announced he's moving to HW too but his name hardly gets a mention. So why is it that these two names pop up more than most others at the moment given that one is out of the game all together (so we should assume) and the other is a non-entity at Heavyweight statistically?
There are plenty of fighters with bigger mouths that don't get nearly as much attention: Zab Judah (isn't he fighting sometime soon?), Anthony Mundine (isn't he fighting sometime soon?), Anthony Small (Who? You say!), James Toney, Mayorga, Edison Miranda etc etc C'mon man, dig deeper!
Well, one was the P4P #1 a couple of months ago before he "retired". Here lies the main reason for the frequent discussion, most people don't believe he will stay retired. So in a way, arguably the best fighter in the world is still in the equation, why wouldn't people talk about him? All of this is dependent on how serious his retirement is of course. And David Haye, well, Heavyweight boxing is arguably the most exciting in the sport especially to the mainstream. Its dullness in the mainstream forces us to try and extract anything remotely interesting from it. And old Mr. Haye likes to run his mouth, which adds intrique, interest, entertainment etc to his name. Pretty simple really, Wlad reigns supreme in the HW division and no one really has a chance of beating him, in comes a loud mouth young fighter with an overconfidence problem. It practically writes itself.
I think Style wise Floyd vs Margarito is very interesting. They are both each other's worse enermies in terms of styles. There are a lot of truths about a good boxer always beats brawler but also that a good big guy would always beat a good little guy. Floyd vs Margarito would be a perfect example of this. Also Cotto and Floyd are also rivals with Cotto having a better punch while Floyd is faster, and better defense which makes people wonder if Floyd can do it since he possesse the better defense.
Floyd is one of the most accomplished fighters in the history of the sport and retired; undefeated, linear welterweight champion, ring magazine welterweight champion, p4p champion, and WBC welterweight champion ... he also was held 2 belts from 2 different weight classes last year. Haye is only 1 of 3 fighters throughout the history of the cruiserweight division to be recognized as the undisputed champion. Holyfield, Bell, and Haye ... so that says alot about him ... he also shows that he isn't scared of anyone and he's confident. Haye wants to try himself against the best guy in the division and thats why he's going straight to Wlad to challenge him.
