He said he quit in an interview after the fight.

    He made the right choice.

    I agree with you....Cotto did quit....out of gas...body shots....he quit...
    couldn't continue....wisely took a knee.

His confidence isn't shaken and he can bounce back.

    From this definition (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/quit)
    quit (kwt)
    v. quit or quit·ted (kwtd), quit·ting, quits
    v.tr.
    1. To depart from; leave: "You and I are on the point of quitting the theater of our exploits" Horatio Nelson.
    2. To leave the company of: had to quit the gathering in order to be home by midnight.
    3. To give up; relinquish: quit a job.
    4. To abandon or put aside; forsake: advised them to quit their dissipated ways.
    5. To cease or discontinue: asked them to quit talking; quit smoking.
    6. Computer Science To exit (an application).
    7.
    a. To rid oneself of by paying: quit a debt.
    b. To release from a burden or responsibility.
    8. To conduct (oneself) in a specified way: Quit yourselves like adults.
    v.intr.
    1. To cease performing an action. See Synonyms at stop.
    2. To give up, as in defeat; stop.
    3. To leave a job.
    adj.
Absolved of a duty or an obligation; free.

point 1 says: "To cease performing an action"
point 2 says "to give up"

Either one of these is correct. However, your connotation that he is a "quitter", that is someone who gives up at the faintest hint of loss, is not correct. He fought to himself to a standstill. Cotto could no longer defend himself and he knew he could not win and was about to face a terrible beating. For what?

I never consider a fighter a quitter when taking a beating like that. The sad thing is that people would have been calling McClellan a quitter if he had decided that he had enough a round or 2 earlier in his fight with Benn. We need to be more educated fans, and realize that when a fighter is taking that kind of beating... they shouldn't be labeled as quitters when they know that enough is enough. We don't need tragedies in this sport. A quitter is somebody who just quits out of frustration... or quits during the middle of a hard fight, finds a way to get DQ'd, ect... Not a fighter who is taking a horrible beating and the fighter's corner and the ref aren't bright enough to stop it themselves. Would it be better if they pretended to be knocked out cold? This **** isn't a game, it's life and death.

Some guys don't know what a quitter is. The perfect example of a quitter is Golota. In this sport of boxing, when you have fought the good fight and lost, and decide not to continue, that is not quitting. If it is quitting, it is not the true definition of a fighter who quits during a fight. You don't quit in round 11 with a broken nose, and taking body shots from a man like AM...you give up because you had enough. You know, people almost called Israel Vasquez a quitter lol. He had a cracked nose against Raf Marquez.

    Mike Tyson has quit
    Vitali Klitschko has quit
    Morales has quit
    Vasquez has quit
    Duran has quit
    Zoo has quit
    Oscar has quit
    Frietas has quit
    *hasnt chavez even quit?

Not wanting to continue taking severe punishment in the face of absalute destruction is part of our sport.... only a complete fool, tool and moron would paint cotto with the same brush they paint every other quitter.... or try to lower guys like vasquez and cotto for quitting under those circumstances.

Not every fighter are the vargas's and wards of the world.... thats what makes those warriors so special when they DO come along, and yet at the same time, anyone with half a brain and common sense has nothing bad to say about cottos submitting to margarito in that fight....

all quit jobs are not equal.... cotto did his best and had nothing else to give, he chose to stop the fight, he quit to fight another day. Plain and simple... doesnt make him any less to me, he just isnt on the same level as the purest of death before dishonor type warriors like vargas and micky ward. But it doesnt make him any less of a fighter then i thought of him beforehand to me eather, just in terms of heart hes not at their level... big deal.

    Just IMO
