I fought a few pro bouts with little success, but I retired and became the
greatest killer outside of the ring. I became associated with a famous man
and a deadly event in America. Fear me not as I am now dead.Who am I ?

John D Matthews wrote My Name is Violence, a mob enforcer extraordinaire and a boxer ver ordinaire. Don't know what name he fought under but was hit shortly after the publication of his tell all book.

Mickey Cohen was another useless pug who made waves in the Los Angeles underworld.

I've never read it but apparently his autobiography is a great read and his true character was not unlike the fictional account James Ellroy memorably portrayed in LA Confidential and White Jazz.

yg, Correct, Machine Gun Jack McGurn had but 5 bouts before hooking up with tha infamous Al Capone, where he became a bodyguard and notorious hit-man using a machine gun often. He was the gangster that barged into the dressing room of the famous comic Joe E Lewis, and slit his throat, slicing off part of Lewis's tongue...Later on he was the brains of the Valentine's Day massacre in Chicago. McGurn was himself machine gunned to death in 1936...Live by the sword, DIE by the sword... :good

For once? You must not be paying too close attention.

However, I stand by my answer this time.

Mickey Cohen could have been a decent guess to, he was a mediocre pro for a while before he became a big time gangster
