Rocky refused to shake hands in the build up to big fights himself. So too did George Foreman. I keep an eye out for these stories they are good.

When he wasn’t mugging people for chump change and disguised as a cop pulling women over at night?

He could have fought Liston though but never did. Liston made his debut in '53 and while Rocky retired only a few years later, he was only 32 and could have come back to take on a Liston on the rise.

If Marciano ever fought Liston I promise you he'd have been extremely bent out of shape, inside 4 rounds

Yes, you make the same point as me, albeit more succinctly....

When George Foreman was getting ready to fight Evander Holyfield in Atlantic City Donald Trump took Kevin Costner to his dressing room. They had a little conversation and then Kevin went to shake George's hand before he left. George said he doesn't shake hands before a fight. When Kevin was almost out the door George called him back and shook his hand. That revealed something about all three men. I heard this story when Howard Stern was interviewing him.

See my post below. George made an exception.

Liston is precisely the breed of modern heavy that Marciano chose to avoid by retiring after a handful of fights at the elite level (albeit against ancient opponents). The grind of Liston would have exposed Marciano for what he was, an anachronism from another era.

i saw liston train. he worked real hard back then. if that version fought marciano he wouls win easy. but don’t underestimate what a small guy can do. in 71 i got beaten up by a welterweight.

I am one of the minority who thinks otherwise, but to each their own. Sonny was a great fighter for his day, no doubt.

I feel that is a bit unfair. How would you develop mugger strength if you don't mug people?

When Rocky retired, Liston was not even a contender worth of looking, he was having life and death with journeyman Marthy Marshall and was not even in top 20 contenders.

Liston was no name until 1959 when he fought Cleveland Williams.

I love Marciano and in his own way he was a great success but I have to say I agree with you 100%. You expressed my thoughts on this so beautifully better then I ever could.
